  • Why Life Isn’t Black and White: Embracing Complexity Over Exhausting Extremes

Life’s complexities don’t fit neatly into extreme categories, and trying to force them there is exhausting. Focusing on nuance and the gray areas is far more meaningful than living in polarized extremes. It’s time to embrace the fact that most things in life can’t be simplified into either/or—there’s so much more to understand in the messy, complex middle.

  • Why I’m Not Ruthless Enough for Academia: 20 Years of Feeling Behind

After two decades as an academic researcher, I understand that I will never be a good researcher.

I’ve come to realize that I’m not cut out for the opportunism and ruthlessness that seem to drive success in this field.

I’ve always felt a step behind, out of sync with what’s required to get ahead.

I am more out of place than anything.

    Academia is an emotional career.

The longer I stay, the more self-doubt I have.

I “should” have left already, or should I?

While the only thing that will allow me to keep going, every day is to go for a swim, eat dinner with my family, and do a little bit of homework with my kids.

I wish there was a better way, but I had more confidence in who I was when I was 23, then me now at 45.

The only thing that I know that works is going for a swim, and listening to my breathing.

  • Why Being Too Productive in Academia Scares Me: The Hidden Costs Behind the Numbers

Being too productive in academia often scares me. Academic productivity for its own sake often leads to various issues.

What is too productive? I don’t know, but I know that there are many choices that are made to get there.

To truly understand what productivity means, you have to look behind the scenes.

It's not just about hitting numbers; it's about understanding the context, what those numbers represent, and the hidden dynamics at play.

Without that deeper insight, it’s easy to misjudge what success in academia really looks like.

  • If Not You, Then Who? My Journey from Academia to Academic Entrepreneur

I’ve reached a point where academia no longer fascinates me as it once did. Now, I feel ready to step back and focus more on becoming an academic entrepreneur. The fear of stepping away to fully commit to the R3ciprocity Project has faded, and I no longer feel the need to play the academic game to impress others. My true calling lies in making the Reciprocity Project a meaningful tool for those struggling in PhD life. Research is tough, and without a platform like this, many will continue to struggle without real support.

  • Why Everyone Misunderstands What It’s Really Like to Be an Academic Researcher (Including Me)

If you're inside the academic research profession, it often feels like you're working nonstop, leaving you puzzled about how successful people in the field manage it. From the outside, people often think academic researchers don't do much beyond teaching. Both perspectives are completely off the mark. To truly understand the demands of academic research, you need to step into the field and experience it firsthand. Empathy and direct involvement are essential to making accurate inferences about what this career really entails.

  • Researchers Aren’t Paid to Think, They’re Paid to Write

The expectation isn’t thoughtful reflection—it’s output. If you believe the job is about deep thinking, you’ll be disappointed. The reality is simple: your career is measured by how much you write, not how much you think. Success hinges on producing an enormous amount of written work. Knowing this upfront is key to surviving and thriving in academia. You get paid for publications, not contemplation.

  • Why Our Humanity Holds Us Back from Becoming Billionaires (And Why That’s Okay)

The reason most of us don't become billionaires is rooted in our very humanity. While the potential is there, and we can choose that path, many of us don’t because we are pulled by diverse human desires and needs that often lead us in different directions. Our emotional, social, and psychological drives shape the choices we make, sometimes steering us away from the relentless pursuit of wealth in favor of more immediate, personal satisfactions.

  • I Don't Know What I'm Doing in Scientific Research—And That's the Point

How do I know that I'm doing the right thing in scientific research and development? The honest answer is—I often don't. Understanding what's truly valid and reliable requires an extraordinary amount of effort and even then, certainty remains elusive. I've come to realize that science isn't so much about uncovering absolute truths as it is about convincing others that what I've done is legitimate.

It's less about finding the "right" answer—which may be impossible—and more about continuously demonstrating that my approach is better than the alternatives. This means embracing the ugly reality of uncertainty and focusing on persuading others of the validity of my work.

In this journey, I've accepted that I may never definitively know if what I'm doing is the absolute right thing. But that won't stop me from putting in the effort to advance my field, challenge existing ideas, and contribute to the collective understanding—even if it's all built on the art of convincing rather than undeniable truth.
