Kathak virtuoso Pandit Rajendra Gangani exclusive interview. Pandit Rajendra Gangani is one of the leading practitioners of the Jaipur Gharana style of Kathak. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2003 for his contribution to the field of Kathak. This is the highest award given for performing arts in India, and Gangani received this award from Indian president A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.

Rajendra Kumar Gangani was born in the traditional family of Jaipur Gharana. He has started his training of Kathak Dance from his father Guru Kundan Lal Gangani at the early age of four in Jodhpur. An outstanding performer of Kathak, he has evolved a distinct and personal style. Though best known as a soloist, he has choreographed a number of productions including ‘Prakriti’, ‘Jhalak’, ‘Panchamukhi’ and ‘Anadi-Anant’. He has composed music for these works within the traditional format. He has also acquired proficiency in playing the Pakhawaj.  

Having performed extensively within the country, his performances have also taken him all over Europe, Middle East, Russia, and the United States.  As a Kathak Guru at the Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, he has made a significant contribution in grooming young dancers. He was awarded the Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1991 and the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2002 from the former Hon’ble President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.  Rajendra Kumar Gangani joined Kathak Kendra on 07.08.1985 and presently he is working as Kathak Guru since September 1999.

Learn an Indian classical dance lesson from Kathak Guru Prerana Shrimali. She is answering all frequently asked questions in Kathak, Indian Classical Dance. Prerana Shrimali is a senior dancer of Jaipur Gharana of Kathak. Born in 1959 at Banswara in Rajasthan, Shrimati Prerana Shrimali was initiated in Kathak dance by Shri Gauri Shanker. Later, she was groomed in the art at Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, under Shri Kundan Lal Gangani of the Jaipur gharana. She also learnt to play the Pakhawaj and studied vocal music.

Shrimati Prerana Shrimali is among the leading Kathak dancers of her generation. A versatile dancer, she has evolved an individual style in her presentation and gained wide popularity as a soloist. She has also choreographed several productions including Doosro Na Koi – Verses of Meera, Aavartan, Vistaar, Vivriti and Aaratis. She has participated in several international dance seminars and conferences and has presented Kathak in the Festival of India in the U.K., the Asian Performing Arts Festival in Japan, the Avignon Festival in France, and the Dance Festival in Switzerland. In the U.S., she has performed at Carnegie Hall, New York, and presented a series of performances in Jordan, Syria and Muscat. She has also imparted training to young dancers at well-known institutions such as Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and the Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra. She has served as Repertory Chief of the Kathak Kendra, Delhi. Shrimati Prerna Shrimali has been bestowed the Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Rashtriya Ekta Award of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. Her dance has been featured in the film The Far Pavilions produced by BBC. She has herself directed a film, Pathrai Ankhon ke Sapne, for Doordarshan. Shrimati Prerana Shrimali was awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for the year 2009 for her contribution to Kathak dance.

Fateh Ali Khan got the rare honor if being the only Indian chosen to perform alongside Lady Gaga. He recalls, "Lady Gaga expressed a wish to include sitar in her concert and when I was told about this we had very little time to rehearse before her concert. But we struck the right chord and just practiced once and gave the performance. Needless to say it was a moment of history and everyone loved it."

However, he traces his ancestry to Baba Gopal Das, who converted to Islam, and became Baba Imam Baksh in the 18th century, making him the representative of the 8th generation. In 2012, he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the highest award for performing artists, conferred by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama.

The Dagar Gharana Biography 

The Dagar gharana (or Dagar vani) is a tradition of the classical dhrupad genre of Hindustani classical music spanning 20 generations, tracing back to Swami Haridas (15th century), and including Behram Khan of Jaipur (1753-1878). For some generations its members were associated with the courts of Jaipur, Udaipur, and Mewar. The main feature of the Dagar gharana is sophisticated, subtle, serene and rigorous exposition of alap-jor-jhala, including great attention to microtonal inflection delineating the subtleties of raga often otherwise overlooked or lost. Until the 20th century, it was exclusively a vocal genre (at least in performance), but since the innovations of Zia Mohiuddin Dagar to the rudra vina, that instrument has found a place in performance, following closely the inflections and style of the vocal technique. The genre was carried into the 20th century by seven Dagar brothers and cousins: Aminuddin Dagar and Nasir Moinuddin (Senior Dagar Brothers), Rahim Fahimuddin Dagar, Nasir Zaheeruddin and Nasir Fayyazuddin (Junior Dagar Brothers), H. Sayeeduddin Dagar, and the brothers Zia Mohiuddin Dagar and Zia Fariduddin Dagar. Zia Mohiuddin (rudra vina) and Zia Fareeduddin (vocal) were largely responsible for training today's practitioners, the most prominent of whom include Ritwik Sanyal, Pushparaj Koshti, Wasifuddin Dagar, Bahauddin Dagar, Asit Kumar Banerjee, Uday Bhawalkar, and the Gundecha Brothers.
