The center, founded in 2020 amid protests over racial disparities, will continue under Kendi's leadership. The exact number of job losses remains undisclosed but is estimated between 20 and 30 employees. Current and former staff members have criticized Kendi's management and questioned the layoffs, given the center's substantial funding.

The center, divided into four offices, has faced criticism for its lack of structure and perceived exploitation of staff. Despite these changes, The Emancipator, a racial justice media platform associated with the center, will continue unaffected.

The Center for Antiracist Research was established after Kendi's recruitment to BU in 2020, attracting significant donations for its work, which some critics argue could have been used to benefit Black students instead.
