Juice Fasting For Weight Loss

Let’s talk about juice fasting for weight loss!

As a health and diet coach I’ve worked with a lot of people incorporating juice fasting into their weight loss plan. It works, in fact losing weight on a Juice Fast is incredibly easy, but you have to do it correctly so you lose weight and keep it off.

I’ve worked with so many people who have not only lost a lot of weight while juice fasting, but have also continued to lose weight after the fast was done, and kept it off for good. What’s most important is the part about “continuing to lose weight after the fast is done.” Too many people rely just on the juice fast for losing weight, and overlook what happens after, and if you have a good strategy, the after part is where the magic really happens!

Using the Juice Fasting wisely

Juice fasting has so many benefits, beside just the actual weight loss. Usually by the second or third day of a Juice Fast, you will feel light, calmer, clearer, your skin will glow, your belly will flatten, and any puffiness and water-retention starts fading away. You feel absolutely fabulous, and with that comes a renewed sense of motivation, inspiration, and empowerment. I have to say this is what I love most about Juice Fasting! And, this is what you need to tap into to keep you on track once the Juice Fast is over.

When you feel great, there’s nothing that is going to stand in your way, and you are going to do whatever you can to to continue to feel that  great, right? So while you are doing the Juice Fast, this is the time to come up with a plan, to tap into that strong determination to continue losing weight, and to figure out what are the things you need to do to get the results you want, and keep you on track.

Two important benefits from Juice Fasting

The two most important benefits of Juice Fasting that will help you continue to lose weight after the Juice Fast is completed is the decrease in appetite, and re-setting of your taste buds.

Most people gain weight because they eat too much, and they eat too much of the wrong things. Juice fasting will shrink your stomach so that you physically don’t feel good eating too much food. Juice fasting also gives you a break from super sweet, salty, and overly processed foods, so you can enjoy the taste and flavor of healthy foods again.

Knowing this now, before you start the Juice Fast will help guide you when you are breaking the fast and introducing solid food back into your diet. You don’t want to return to your previous diet and the amounts of food you once were eating, because that’s how you gained the weight to begin with.

Make a weight loss plan while you are on the Juice Fast, not after

While you are on the Juice Fast, losing weight, and feeling great, this is the perfect time to come up with a strong weight loss strategy for when you complete the Juice Fast.

Start with asking yourself:

Once you have completed the Juice Fast:

* What foods are you willing to cut out of your diet?

* What foods are you willing to reduce, or have occasionally?

* How are you going to make your meals healthier?

* Are you going to start exercising more regularly? If so, what are you going to do,

Is Pressure Getting In Your Way To Lose Weight?

Some people thrive under pressure, and some people crumble. Myself, I tend to crumble! I always thought pressure could be a good thing, it could give me the added push to get things done and quickly, but in fact I repeatedly find myself feeling paralyzed and anxious when under pressure, and sometimes I feel defeated by the very things I set out to do.

As a health coach, I also see this with some of the clients I work with. When it comes down to diet changes and weight loss goals, some excel when they have goals and deadlines, and the pressure invigorates them. But for others, the moment pressure sets in, they find themselves procrastinating and even sabotaging every effort they make.

If you have health and diet goals you’re working towards, it’s important to know how you respond to your goals. Does a goal start off as an exciting goal, and then turns into pressure, and is that pressure constructive? Does having specific goals and deadlines propel you forward, or does it overwhelm you? Does pressure turn into motivation and creative energy for you, or does it create anxiety and stress?

Knowing how you respond to pressure can help you establish an effective strategy to actually achieve your goals. Too many times I see this one important step overlooked, and people try to go about achieving their goals all the wrong way, over and over again.

My story: I lost 30 pounds by going on a “pressure-less” diet! 

A few years ago I lost 30 pounds (see my blog post/video on how I lost 30 pounds here). I had been struggling for years to lose weight, and the more I tried to lose weight, the more I gained! The pressure I was putting on myself to lose weight was worse than the weight itself, and it was only until I surrendered to the weight loss, did I start losing weight.

When I say surrender, this doesn’t mean giving-up. It means letting go of pushing myself too hard, letting go of the pressure, letting go of high expectations and trying to control everything.

For years I went about trying to lose weight by setting out diet goals, rules of what I could eat, how much, and I had weekly weight loss targets. Sometimes these goals were so high and difficult, I wonder if anyone could reach them. I certainly didn’t! In fact, having such goals just made me more anxious, more stressed, and more unhappy – all of which made me want to eat even more.

I realized that my problem wasn’t the food, it was the pressure I was putting on myself that would make me want to sabotage all my efforts. I had to work on the pressure, not my diet. And that’s what I did. I re-worked my weight loss strategy to make it the most “pressure-less” weight loss plan. Instead of putting myself on a super restrictive diet, I made one goal, to lose 0-1 pounds a month. My only guideline was even if I didn’t lose that one pound that month, I had to make sure I didn’t gain any more weight. Easy!

From that “pressure-less” diet plan of losing 0-1 pound a month, I lost 30 pounds in about a year and a half. And, I’ve kept it off for about 4 years now. It was easy weight loss as well because I eliminated the very things that was causing me anxiety and stress, and in turn, the root cause for me to overeat. There were even many months where I lost even more weight than planned, and I met my weight loss goal much faster than I expected.

Is pressure standing in your way?

We hear all the time that tea can boost your metabolism, but is it true, and should you start drinking it? Is this the miracle beverage if you’re trying to lose weight?

Can tea boost metabolism?

Certain teas like green tea, white tea, black tea, pu-erh tea, oolong tea, etc., can raise your metabolism, just like eating certain spices like chilis can also raise your metabolism. But if you look into the research and studies, the amount of extra calories you burn from consuming these teas are very little, like an extra 10 or 20 extra calories, maybe 30.

In order to have a calorie deficit to lose weight, you need to be burning a few hundred calories a day to lose weight, not 10-20 calories. So even though the tea might boost your metabolism slightly, by itself it won’t have a significant effect on your weight.

What will boost your metabolism?

The only thing I believe has the best impact on your metabolism, by boosting it, and keeping it strong (especially as you age), is exercise and building muscle. The more fit you are, the stronger your metabolism will be. If you build muscle, and maintain the muscle as you age, this will help keep your metabolism strong.

Other ways tea can help you lose weight:

Even though I don’t think tea will do all that much for your metabolism, I do believe tea can be used as a weight loss aid.

Tea can boost your exercise performance

Drinking tea (green tea, white tea, black tea, pu-erh tea, oolong tea, etc.) before exercise can give you an energy boost for a more vigorous workout. The more vigorous your workout, the more calories and fat you will burn. The caffeine in tea will give you an energy boost. If you’re trying to lose weight, and you’re exercising regularly, perhaps try and have a cup of plain tea 30-60 minutes before working out to see if it improves your workout and endurance.

If you drink coffee or espresso before you workout, try tea instead! I think tea is a much better alternative to coffee because the antioxidants in the tea, especially green tea, can counter free radical damage from exercise, and the minerals in tea can aid in recovery as well. Coffee tends to be quite acidic and inflammatory, two reasons why you’d want to avoid it if you’re exercising regularly.

Try drinking a cup of tea 30-60 minutes before you exercise and see how it goes. Make sure it’s a plain tea, no sugar added!

Tea can be used as an appetite suppressant

Caffeine is widely known to be an appetite suppressant. That’s the active ingredients in most diet pills. Drinking one or two cups of plain tea a day, can in fact help to decease your appetite.

Tea is a good alternative to a snack. Not only can it bring your appetite down, it’s also calorie-free (when consumed plain), and can have nutritional benefits as well from the antioxidants and minerals. Like any other caffeinated beverage, make sure not to drink too much, or too late in the day because you don’t want the caffeine interfering with your sleep, or making you jittery or anxious!

In conjunction with a healthy diet, regular exercise, and drinking moderate amounts; tea can very well be part of your weight loss arsenal. Just make sure to use it as an additional weight loss tool, and not rely on it as a miracle drink!

Annmarie Gianni Skin Care – SUN LOVE Sun Protection Review

I am super excited to do this product review of Annmarie Gianni Skin Care sunscreen: Sun Love

Being a fair-skined Canadian living in Bali, Indonesia, I’m constantly looking for a non-toxic, safe sunscreen that I can wear regularly, and doesn’t leave me with a thick, white, oily cast.

If you’ve tried any of the non-toxic sunscreens known as “physical sunscreens” available these days, you probably know what I’m talking about. These mineral-based sunscreens (made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) rest on the surface of the skin to block UVA and UVB rays from penetrating the skin. They do a great job protecting the skin, but unfortunately, majority of these sunscreens feel awful to wear. They are heavy, oily, not very breathable, sometimes chalky, and for some people like me, they can cause terrible pimples, breakouts, even rashes and hives.

Because my skin can react so badly to sunscreens, I normally dread wearing them, and in fact for many years I went without wearing any sunscreen (I’m sure I’ve mentioned this many times on my blog before!). Here in Bali, I used to organize my days that I wouldn’t go outside between 9am-3pm, so I wouldn’t have to wear sunscreen or get burned. But after giving birth to my daughter Luna Ray, my whole schedule changed, and we’re regularly going outside during peak sun hours.

So I needed to find a solution, and fast. I don’t mind wearing the heavy sunscreens at the beach, because even though they might not look good, they do work, and they are safe. But during the day when I’m walking around or going places, I need a sunscreen that isn’t visible, that isn’t irritating my skin, that’s definitely not giving me pimples, and is protecting me from getting burnt and from sun damage. Living in Indonesia, we’re right near the equator, the sun is STRONG! And let’s just say I’ve tried MANY sunscreens, both physical sunscreens and even at times, chemical sunscreens, and unfortunately majority don’t react well with my skin.

I have to say, when I received a sample of Sun Love by Annmarie Gianni Skin Care, I fell in love instantly! Words can’t express the relief of finally finding a sunscreen that is good quality, safe, non-toxic, and most importantly looks and feels good on my skin!!!

Non-oily, non-greasy, and extremely light weight

We’ve started this month’s Healthy Habits Challenge of drinking green juice every day for the entire month of May! I’m loving this Challenge. So far, so good!

My last blog post, I did a video showing how to make a green juice with a blender and a strainer instead of a juicer. I know not everyone has a juicer, and I want everyone to be able to join this month’s Healthy Habits Challenge. Since making the video demo, I’ve received quite a few questions here and on YouTube asking me why remove fiber from green juice? Many have asked why I don’t just leave it in, some even asked why I would take it out, don’t we need the fiber?

Why remove fiber from green juice?

Let’s first explore the difference between a green juice (without the fiber) and a blended drink, like a green smoothie (with the fiber). Besides the pulp being removed, if you were to compare them ounce per ounce, the green juice would be made from more vegetables, greens, and fruits, than the green smoothie, and therefore have much more nutrition (quantity-wise, the fiber in a green smoothie bulks it up). You’d also be able to drink more of the green juice because it doesn’t have any fiber, and you wouldn’t feel as full like you would drinking a green smoothie.

So content wise, a green juice has more nutrients than a green smoothie, but a green smoothie will fill you up more, and for much longer.

How I see it, since you can’t fill up on a green juice as easily as a green smoothie, a green smoothie is more like a nutritious meal, and a green juice is more like a fresh, concentrated supplement, containing a substantial amount of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, amino acids, enzymes, etc.

We know that all nutrients found in food are much more bio-absorbable than any pill supplement you buy at a health food store or chemist/pharmacy. Personally I want to fill up on as much nutrition as possible, and I want it from my fresh food.

Removing the fiber isn’t always bad

People always get nervous when I talk about removing fiber. Yes, fiber is a good thing, but you don’t necessarily need it in all your food, and sometimes by removing it, it makes it easier for your body to digest and absorb the nutrition.

For anyone who is sick or has a weak digestive system, drinking juice without the fiber is optimal because their body doesn’t have to spend it’s energy breaking down the fiber and extracting the nutrition, the juicer or the blender/strainer does that for them!

I see juice without the fiber as easily absorbable liquid nutrition. The body doesn’t have to spend so much energy on digestion, and it gets a full array of easily absorbable nutrients, which can very well help to build anyone’s nutritional reserves. This is good for everyone, sick people and healthy people!

So is green juices better than green smoothies?

They’re so different, I don’t think you can even compare the two. What you need to do is recognize the difference, and choose according to what your body and lifestyle needs. Green smoothies are great as a healthy meal, and green juices are more like a concentrated supplement, providing your body with a nutritional boost, and building your nutritional reserves.

Radiance Central’s Monthly Healthy Habits Challenge!

May 2015 Challenge: Drink 1 Green Juice A Day

Here at Radiance Central, we’re focusing on one healthy habit a month. It’s so much easier to get healthy when you focus on one thing at a time, do it consistently, and do it well! I’m all about quality over quantity, and last month when we launched the Monthly Healthy Habits Challenge series, I saw how just focusing on drinking a lot of water consistently every day for an entire month, not only improved my health, but it made making lifestyle changes easy and fun.

So this month, let’s get the green juice in! Let’s drink green juice every day this month! If you don’t have a juicer, I made a video today showing how to make green juice using a blender and a strainer. If you don’t have either for the Healthy Habits Challenge, some people are making green drinks mixing green powder and water, and drinking that daily (if you want to go that route, I recommend HealthForce Vitamineral Green).

Can you make a green juice using a blender instead of a juicer?

I get asked a lot if you can make a green juice, vegetable juice, or any juice using a blender instead of a juicer, and the answer is yes, yes, YES! And, it’s easy! In fact I know some people who prefer making their green juices with a blender and strainer, over using a juicer because the clean-up is much faster! These people have both juicers and blenders, and they reach for their blender and strainers every day to make their green juices. Me, I’ll be honest, I prefer my juicer to make my green juices, but that’s me (and maybe it’s because I have an awesome juicer, and a terrible blender, and strangely enough, I actually like cleaning my juicer!).

Do you need a high speed blender (like a Vitamix or Blendtec)?

No! If you’ve been following my videos, you know I don’t own a turbo blender (not yet!). Back in Canada, I had a KitchenAid blender which I loved, and it was a great blender, but here in Bali I have a terrible blender, probably the opposite of a high speed blender. I would say this blender is not only a “low speed” blender, but the blades are not even sharp! Somehow, it still does make a lovely green juice. So if I can make nice green juices and vegetable juices with my blender, you can make juices with yours.

Additional tools you’ll need to make a green juice with your blender

To make a smooth and delicious green juice, you’ll need a strainer to strain the juice after blending it in the blender. You can use a stainless steel fine mesh strainer, or a nylon nut milk bag (pictured below). The fine mesh strainer you can find at any kitchen supply store or even at a dollar store. Just make sure the mesh is very fine. You can find a nut milk bag at a health food store or online, or alternatively you can go to a hardware store a buy a paint strainer bag, which is the exact same thing, but cheaper! I don’t recommend straining the juices with cheese cloth, if you do, you’ll have to double it up a few times, and it can be quite messy.

Radiance Central’s Healthy Habits Challenge  

April 2015 Challenge:  Drinking a minimum of 6-8 cups of water/day

It’s the end of the month, and that means we’ve completed this month’s Healthy Habits Challenge of drinking a minimum of 6-8 cups of water a day.

Living in the hot tropics, I drank more than the minimum, I drank about 3 litres of water a day, and it felt GREAT! I have to say this is the first time in my life I drank an abundance of water daily, and what a difference it makes to feel fully hydrated!

The benefits and changes I experienced:

I have to say the biggest benefit I experienced from the Radiance Central’s Healthy Habits Challenge of drinking more water was the increase of energy. I wasn’t expecting this at all. I always related drinking more water for better digestion, appetite control, and the effects of being well hydrated has on the skin, but I never connected hydration with energy levels. This to me makes me want to continue drinking plenty of water every day. Now that I know what it feels like to drink a lot of water, I notice a big energy drop when I don’t drink enough.

I also noticed that once I got through the first week of adjusting to the increase of fluids, I found the increase of water did in fact reduce water retention. I had a much flatter stomach and felt my body could efficiently release and flush out any extra water I was holding onto. So definitely less water retention, less puffiness, and less bloating.

Also skin and hair – way more hydrated! Love this! Not only did my skin feel and look more plumped-up, clear, and soft, but my hair too felt softer and shinier!

What I was expecting, but didn’t happen!

Everyone who’s ever had a baby or toddler would know, you aren’t getting the quality sleep you used to (especially if you’re like me and still nursing and co-sleeping). I was hoping the increase of water would help the bags and dark circles under my eyes miraculously disappear, but no, unfortunately it didn’t (I have other suggestions for the bags and dark circles here!)

I also didn’t notice any difference in my digestion, but then again, I don’t really have any digestive issues to begin with. Maybe if I had issues already with constipation or heart burn, maybe I’d see a difference with the increase of water intake. Also, I never noticed any difference in my appetite or weight either. I know that when I’m dehydrated I definitely mistaken thirst for hunger and eat more. For some reason during this month’s Healthy Habits Challenge I never really thought about how my water intake was affecting my appetite, and if it was significantly decreasing it. In retrospect, I don’t think the increase of water affected my appetite, but then again, looking back even if it didn’t decrease my appetite, my appetite never significantly increased either, and in fact I don’t recall at any time over this past month I ever over ate or felt the inclination to do so (which when I’m dehydrated, I can easily over eat).

What are your results from doing this month’s Healthy Habits Challenge of drinking a minimum of 6-8 cups of water a day?

Yesterday someone left a question asking how to get rid of cravings for sweets. When I read the comment, I immediately thought about how much I could relate to that dilema. After giving birth to my daughter Luna Ray, I felt like I developed a strong sweet tooth overnight. I never had that while I was pregnant with her, but when she arrived, so did an unquenchable sweet tooth! Perhaps it’s from the postpartum hormones or lack of sleep, but for a long time all I could think about, and dream about, was sweet food!

So for myself, I needed to tackle that issue quick, and through various experiments there’s two things that worked for me to decrease and prevent cravings for sweets and treats.

How did I get rid of cravings for sweets?

Two things that help me the most to get rid of and prevent cravings for sweets: increasing consumption of starchy complex carbohydrates (whole grains, beans, legumes, pulses, and starchy vegetables like yams, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, etc.), and exercise (cardio and strength training).

What about fruit, or healthy desserts to get rid of cravings?

You might be wondering what about fruit? What about a healthy dessert made with dried fruit or honey, maple syrup? Wouldn’t that satisfy sweet cravings?

For me, not always! This is not to say that I don’t eat fruit or a healthy dessert, I do, and I love them, but to deal with the unrelenting sweet cravings that can be ingrained into my daily life, I want to get rid of the cravings to begin with, not substitute the cravings with something else. I know myself well enough to know that when I’m having a lot of strong sweet cravings, if I eat something sweet, even if it’s made out of healthy ingredients, sometimes I end up over-eating it, or not feeling completely satisfied.

So to be clear, I do eat fruit, I eat fruit every day, and I do eat desserts made out of healthy ingredients, but I don’t rely on them to get rid of my cravings. Complex starchy carbohydrates (like whole grains, beans, legumes, etc.), and exercise, especially cardiovascular exercise, help prevent and eliminate sweet cravings, many times instantaneously!

Starchy Complex Carbohydrates

So when I started having crazy sugar and sweet cravings, I increased my daily consumption of complex carbohydrates like whole grains, beans, legumes, and starchy vegetables. These food not only have a good amount of carbs in them, but also fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals as well. This not only works as a great carb fix, but works to stabilize your blood sugar and make you feel full and satisfied.

I don’t need to eat a lot of these carbs either, but I do have to make sure they are part of my daily diet in order to ward off sugar cravings. I find what works is having small portions once or twice (sometimes 3 times) a day with vegetables and/or a protein, to make a complete and satisfying meal. My portion sizes vary, but on average I have about 1/2 cup of complex carbohydrates in a meal.

Exercise

All exercise is fantastic to stabilize blood sugar, boost mood, and release stress and tension. If you have a sweet craving, go and exercise. I don’t know many people who go and workout, and afterwards want to stop at a bakery to buy cake to eat on their way home.

When you exercise, you feel so good about yourself and how you feel, you get a natural high. This can counter the cravings, and if you exercise regularly, you’ll naturally notice those sweet cravings decrease over time without much effort at all.

The last 

I frequently receive emails asking me about the challenges of feeding children healthy food, how to do it when junk food, and fast food are everywhere?

Being a first time mom, I’m definitely learning as my daughter grows. She’s still young (1.5 years old), so I feel this is a perfect time to set a healthy and balanced foundation.

One thing that I observed earlier on, is she associates different things with different people. For example, she associates milk with me (obviously because I’m nursing her), she associates playing hide and seek with her father, piggy-back rides with her babysitter, and playing ball with the neighbour’s boys.

Taking that a step further, I don’t feed her junk food or sweet treats, so she doesn’t expect it from me, or ask me for it, ever! (which therefore helps avoid conflicts and tantrums- even better!) For right now, it’s really that easy. I personally don’t feed her any junk food or treats, but occassionally my husband, friends, or family do give her small treats, which is fine because it’s an occasional treat, and it’s not coming from the person who’s feeding her majority of the time (me).

Since my husband gives her occassional treats, she asks him for it, especially if she sees it, or sees him eating it, but she’ll never ask me (because she knows I won’t give it to her). I think if I were the one feeding her all the time and also giving her treats, it would be much harder, she’d probably ask for the treats all the time, and expect it from me.

I also find not having treats in the house helps a lot, plus making the effort not to eat treats in front of her. Little details like this make a huge difference!

I also have to say, based on my own personal experience of growing up in a household where my parents were pretty strict about eating healthy food, I naturally developped healthy eating habits that became my foundation. But, as I grew older and more independant, if I wasn’t allowed junk food or treat food at home, I would find it elsewhere!

So as for now, knowing that the majority of time I’m providing my daughter with good quality, healthy food, I choose not to worry too much about the sweets and treats she occassinally gets from other people. If I get stressed and anxious about it, it creates no value for her or I.
