Mark is the author of Embodiment, Working with the Body in Training and Coaching, and Embodied Meditation. In Episode 2 of Season 2 of Radical Embodiment the Podcast I interviewed Amy Lynn, a licensed psychotherapist in Colorado, and a true artist and psychic who supports you in healing trauma and aligning with more of your soul so that you can embody your wholeness.

In the episode, Amy shares what happens when we are in a trauma response. What happens with trauma is we can’t bring all of the parts of who we are into the body. There are ways we are suppressing, ignoring, or overemphasizing parts of ourselves because of dysregulation. Amy defines trauma as anytime our sense of security or status quo is abruptly shifted & we’re not able to immediately self regulate.

Today's episode starts with a discussion on the all too common limiting belief that many women have of, 'I am too much.' Whether we believe our bodies are too much, our emotions are too much, or our needs are too much, or a combination of all of those. 

Every single female client of mine has some sort of struggle around being ‘too much’. One may consider her needs to be too much in a relationship. Another feels the salary she wants to ask for at work is too much. Many of the women I work with have been conditioned since childhood to feel wrong for their body’s natural reaction to release tears after being hurt or feeling upset. We are conditioned to not ask for too much or be too emotional.

If you have the sense that you are too much, whether physically, emotionally, energetically, or spiritually, you will naturally and subconsciously start to limit your breath. You will breathe more shallowly, reducing your oxygen intake as you strive to take up less space.

Anytime you suppress your needs or wants because they feel too much, you are pushing away a part of yourself. Rejecting a significant piece of who you are is painful. To cover up this pain, to distract yourself from what you are really feeling, is where patterns of disordered eating, popping out of yourself, etc. begin to be created.

At the end of the episode, Emily shares a practice, Taking Up Your Space, where you get to have your own experiential of what it feels like to literally feel yourself, energetically, and how that can help to unwind the outdated, limiting story of 'I am too much.'
