Six months ago, location-independence was far from the norm. But the COVID-19 pandemic changed everything. Suddenly 70% of Americans were working remotely. Many companies have fully embraced remote work. And nearly half of employees say they don't want to go back to the office.
At the same time countries have locked down their borders, airline companies have tanked, and the freedom of movement many digital nomads have become accustomed to has been taken away.
So what does the future hold?
In this episode, I sit down with digital nomad researcher Tom Knoll to explore what COVID-19 means for the future of location-independence.

An update from last episode's guest, Tez Steinberg, who is days away from finally setting off on his 2,500 mile journey across the Pacific Ocean. We discuss the COVID-19 pandemic, Tez's biggest takeaways since beginning the project three years ago, and how it feels to be just days away from launch.

Three years ago Tez Steinberg set a goal for himself: to row unassisted across an ocean. Since announcing his plan to the world, it’s been his single obsession. To fund the project, which requires the construction of a custom rowboat and purchase a variety of equipment necessary to survive the open ocean, he’s invested tens of thousands of his personal savings crowdfunded nearly $75,000. And he’s given this crazy mission a name: the United World Challenge.
A few days from now, Tez will finally put his boat in the water and set off across the Pacific Ocean. He plans to row 2,500 miles alone over the course of three months from California to Hawaii - something less than 9 people in the world have ever done.
Tez's story is an incredible example of someone with a massive dream, the guts to share it with the world, and the relentless perseverance to make it happen.

For the past 10 years Mike Savas has lived a life "on the go" - constantly moving from city to city around the world, rarely spending more than a week anywhere.
Mike got his start in the concert industry, and now manages the international tours of artists like Bon Jovi, Katy Perry, The Black-eyed Peas, Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, and Hugh Jackman. He also leads trips around the world through his company The Adventure Factory, owns and manages multiple Airbnb rental properties around the world, and is an avid marathon runner and mountain climber. Mike has an energy and a perspective on life that's contagious. Many people would think Mike's lifestyle is totally insane, and it kind of is. But he's got it dialed.
In this episode, Mike shares his philosophy on how to live an extraordinary life. He shares what led him to a "life on the go", how he's made it sustainable, and how you can do it yourself.

In today's episode, I get interviewed by Tayo Rockson, the host of the As Told By Nomads podcast.
I expand on the ideas of my recent TEDx talk, and we discuss the surprising advantages of remote work, closing the gap between having an idea and making it a reality, and how privilege plays into digital nomadism and living abroad.

I recently did a TEDx talk titled "The Surprising Power of Remote Work". It's been viewed over 50,000 times and has clearly resonated with people.
In the talk, I explain the often-overlooked power of being location-independent - how it gives you the ability to win back your time, travel the world, do “life experiments”, pursue your highest excitement, and work with almost anyone anywhere.
I believe that we must re-create space in our lives to follow our curiosity - to discover the things that light us up, and then pursue them. And that remote work is actually a means to achieving this.

In the final episode of this mini-series on "How to spend your 20's", Les Craig and I discuss how to think about each decade of your life, what a lot of 20-somethings are doing wrong when it comes to spending money, and how to open yourself up to transformational experiences.
Les Craig is an investor with Next Frontier Capital. He used to do top-secret stuff for the CIA, and he makes legendary cocktails.
