SABC Non-Executive board member Krish Naidoo says he stands by his decision not to endorse any moves to re-appoint Hlaudi Motsoeneng as the public broadcaster's acting Chief Operating Officer. This follows media reports that the SABC board is considering a proposal to re-instate Motsoeneng in his original position as Acting COO. The Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein threw out his application for leave to appeal a high court ruling that his appointment to the post by Communication's Minister Faith Muthambi was irrational and should be set aside. ANC struggle veteran Winnie Madikizela-Mandela says the Freedom Charter's clause on free education needs to be revisited. Madikizela-Mandela was reacting to the country-wide protests by university students over possible fee increases for 2017 during a meeting with young people in Soweto. In 1955, the Freedom Charter promised that doors of learning shall be opened to all. And the ANC's 2007 Polokwane conference pledged free education for all poor learners until their first degree. The University of KwaZulu-Natal's Pietermaritzburg campus has been closed after a stand-off between the police and students. One student was seriously injured. The students threw stones at police and police retaliated with rubber bullets and teargas. Students went on the rampage to protest against the government's proposed fee increases for next year. They are demanding that education should be free in their lifetime. Cyril Mnguni reports

As global conservationists and policy makers gather in Johannesburg for the 'Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species' or CITES conference tomorrow (saturday 25 September), Embryo Plus has announced its success with the world's first Cape buffalo calf conceived through in vitro fertilisation. The calf was born in June on a farm in Limpopo. The organisation says this brings hope for species that are endangered. 43 people, 19 of whom are children, will be homeless if the court enforces an eviction order against them. An NGO representing 23 families from Bromwell Street in Woodstock in Cape Town, will be launching an urgent application in the Cape Town High Court today. They want to force the City of Cape Town to arrange temporary accommodation for the families. Eskom CEO, Brian Molefe wants prepaid electricity to be standardised. He was addressing members of parliament yesterday and says introducing legislation on prepaid metering would solve Eskom's problems. But not all South Africans are in favour of this. Residents of Orlando in Soweto protested against prepaid electricity earlier in the week. Arts and Culture Minister, Nathi Mthethwa has described the late Mandoza as a giant and a social unifier He was speaking at the memorial service of the Kwaito music legend at the Ellis park arean in Johannesburg. The award-winning artist - whose real name is Mduduzi Tshabalala - died on Sunday from cancer. He was 38-years-old. Mthethwa says Mandoza's music touched everyone locally and abroad. At least ten Wits University students have been wounded following clashes with security personnel. Two of the wounded have been admitted to hospital. More than 30 students remain at the Hillbrow police station. They were arrested as they attempted to disrupt academic activities. Protesting students have refused to disclose what they intend to do next, saying that would jeopardise their goal to achieve free education. Yesterday, clashes ensued between students and university security who had prevented them from gaining access into a building where they were scheduled to meet. In Port Elizabeth, students shut down the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University's main campus, forcing the management to suspended all academic activities. Students from Walter Sisulu University have rejected Minister Blade Nzimande's announcement on fees yesterday, while those from Fort Hare gave the institution 48 hours to make a decision.
