As we mark Child Protection Week, a study by the University of Cape Town has revealed that one in three South African children are likely to have been sexually abused by the age of 17. The study, which was commissioned by the UBS Optimus Foundation and conducted by the University of Cape Town, is the first national study of child maltreatment in the country. President Jacob Zuma says government is working hard to ensure that the abuse of children is eliminated in society. He was addressing the International Children's Day at Atteridgeville in Tshwane yesterday(Wednesday). The day is observed annually on the 1st of June around the world to honour children's rights as per the proclamation of the 1925 World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland. A new fossil estimated to be 360 million years old , has been discovered on the N2 between Grahamstown and Peddie in the Eastern Cape. The fossil was discovered during blasting for upgrading a portion of the N2. The SACP says the ANC National Executive Committee has been captured by a faction of the party. This comes after the NEC closed its inquiry into alleged state capture by the Gupta family. Following its meeting this past weekend, the NEC says only one person was willing to substantiate claims that the family offered them cabinet posts and tried to manipulate government business in their favour. The SACP has slammed the NEC's investigation as a white wash.
