Parliament has heard that lack of funds has put a halt on the development of the Moloto Rail Development Corridor. The project is aimed at developing a safe public rail infrastructure alongside the Moloto road between Pretoria and Mpumalanga, where scores of people are killed in road crashes every year. While the committee insisted that the rail project should be completed as soon as possible, they were told that the treasury will not release funds for it. Joseph Mosia reports

The Hawks have threatened action against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan. The investigative body says Gordhan missed two deadlines to respond to questions relating to the alleged rogue unit established at SARS while he was still commissioner. The unit was set up in 2007 to assist SARS with high-risk tax, customs and smuggling investigations. It is alleged that the unit was engaged in unauthorised surveillance. The latest salvo from the HAWKS comes after Gordhan criticised the leaking of a second letter to the media. Amos Phago compiled this report

A 14-year-old boy from Katlehong on Gauteng's East Rand is fighting for his life after he was shot following clashes between locals and foreign nationals. Bongani Msimango was shot in his genitals by a stray bullet on Saturday after the killing of a local man by Somali shopkeeper. It's alleged that the man had earlier bought stale chicken and was returning it to the shop when a fight broke out between him and shopkeepers. It resuted in widespread clashes. The situation is tense but calm. Ditaba Tsotetsi reports.

Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga says closing schools with small number of learners is the only solution for the Eastern Cape Education department to deal with the challenge of teacher shortages. Motshekga was speaking in a meeting with parents, principal and education stakeholders in Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas. Factories at Mandeni on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast are still assessing the damage caused by last week's violent protests in the KwaSithebe Industrial Park. Some factories and businesses re-opened on Monday after a week long shutdown. The protests ended after the ANC in the province announced on Friday that it was recalling its PR councillor Bheki Magwaza, who'd been nominated to stand in the upcoming local government elections. Gauteng police say four foreign nationals have been arrested following a clash with residents of the Mandela informal settlement near Katlehong in Ekurhuleni. They have confirmed that one person has been killed and several others, including five foreign nationals, have been wounded. Shops belonging to foreign nationals have also been looted.
