The Gauteng government has vowed to spend less on catering, travel, accommodation and telecommunications in an effort to cut costs. This is in line with Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan's call for all spheres of government to implement cost cutting measures. The province will however continue with massive investments on infrastructure to boost economic growth. It will spend 41-billion rand over the next three years to build roads, hospitals, clinics and schools to improve the delivery of basic services. Gauteng Finance MEC Barbara Creecy presented her 2016/17 budget in the legislature in Johannesburg yesterday (tuesday 8 March). Wisani Makhubele reports.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan says the review by ratings agency Moody's comes about because of serious questions they have about he South African economy. Moody's has placed South Africa's rating of Baa2-negative on review for downgrade, hours before Gordhan goes to the United States on the second leg of his investor roadshow. The IEC was prevented from conducting voter registration in the Vuwani area outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo. The protesting residents blockaded the roads and set alight a school and a spaza shop at Masakona village. Residents are opposed to the inclusion of their area in the newly planned municipality which also encompasses the Malamulele area. Our reporter Jabulani Baloyi reports

The community of ward 13, of the Abaqulusi Municipality in northern KwaZulu-Natal, remains confused about changes brought by the demarcation of municipal boundaries. Some voters who had been part of ward 13 have now been moved to ward 11. Other eligible voters have also been moved to new voting stations. The Independent Electoral Commission in KwaZulu-Natal says changes brought by the demarcation process will only affect the 2016 Local Government Elections. Nonkululeko Hlophe reports
