The situation at the North West University's Mahikeng Campus remains calm but tense following a clash between the students and the Security personnel at the university. Students disrupted the inauguration ceremony of the new Student Representative Council appointed by the University Management. Shorts and teargas as well as live ammunition were fired at the students. A large Police contingency was called to beef-up the University security. Lectures University of the Free State remain suspended following further disruptions on the main in Bloemfontein . In a statement, the management said it is expecting that lectures will resume next Monday. Meanwhile, the Solidarity trade union insists that the university take a pro-active steps to ensure the safety of its members at the university.Thabiso Radebe reports

Continued protests at different universities across the country have resulted in the suspension of academic activities in some of the universities. Workers and students at different universities are protesting against outsourcing and demand for language transformation. Last year during the Fees Must Fall campaigns by students, the Council on Higher Education (CHE), which is the custodian of quality in higher education and advisor to the minister, expressed its view that protests by the students have been given genuine and committed attention by university leaders, but was that enough? The Free Market Foundation wants some sections of the labour law dealing with the bargaining councils be rendered unconstitutional. The foundation has approached the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria to have section 32 of the Labour Relations Act be suspended. The unions have lambasted this application saying the motive is to advance the interests of capitalists while exploiting workers. The Black Sash- a civil society organisation says they waiting with bated breath for what the Minister of Finance Pravin Gordan will announce at this year's budget speech, later today. Black Sash's National Advocacy Manager, Elroy Paulus says his organisation is hoping that government will protect the poor from the current difficult economic times.

Passanger Rail Agency- PRASA says it is working to rid itself of the legacy of its former CEO Lucky Montana. This as Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts asked questions about the agency's management practices and board oversight. The Auditor General found among other things that PRASA had incurred fruitless and wasteful expenditure to the value of more than 550 million rand. Public protector Public Protector Thuli Madonsela says it a major concern that the post office moved to Lavish offices in Centurion at a higher rental. This happened , at a time when it was experiencing financial constraints. When investigating allegations of maladministration and corruption related to improper conduct in the leasing of the Eco Point Office Park, she discovered that the motivation for the relocation was doctored. University Rector Free State, Jonathan Jansen says the university will deal with incidents of violence internally. Protesting students and workers clashed with spectators during a varsity rugby cup game, when they invaded the pitch and disrupted the match. The university has condemned the attack on protestors and at the same time did not condone the disruption of rugby activities. Konelo Lekhafola reports
