A North West teacher has been suspended for allegedly condoning a group of Grade 9 learners to a higher grade against the department's progression policy. 25 learners at Eletsa Secondary School in Letlhabile near Brits were pushed to Grade 10 though they were not eligible for a pass. The department says the affected learners will now be demoted to their previous grades as they did not meet the progression criteria as set by the policy. Phanuel Shuma reports.

National Institute of Communicable of Diseases says there is no outbreak of typhoid fever in Gauteng. This after the Department of Health in Gauteng issued a statement this weekend warning South Africans. The institute says there have been four unrelated cases of typhoid over the past two weeks in Johannesburg‚ but weekend investigations found they were unrelated. Limpopo police and the Madibong community at Jane Furse, in Limpopo, have reacted to the killing of a police officer by funeral goers at the village yesterday. 57-year-old Warrant Officer Boshego Joel Seloga was part of a team that tried to arrest a suspect wanted for crimes committed in Brits in the North West. The suspect called for help and community members, mistaking the police for criminals, rushed to help him. The police officer was cornered and shot dead with his own pistol. The family of slain UJ student, Palesa Madiba, has expressed their gratitude for the support that the public, police and government has given them during this difficult preiod. On Sunday Madiba's remains were handed over to the family by Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Community Safety MEC, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane in Soweto. Madiba's remains were found in a shallow grave in the backyard of her friend's house in Phiri, Soweto in December. She had been missing for more than two years. Jamaine Krige compiled this report
