Families of about 1 900 mental health patients who are accommodated at the private hospital group Life Esidimeni in Randfontein, west of Johannesburg, are at their wits end as the facility is set to close because its contract with the Department of Health is coming to an end. National Student Financial Aid Scheme has confirmed that registration fees amounting to R 1.8 billion rand for all benefiting students has been paid over to universities and technical colleges. This is in line with one of the many concessions made by universities to scrap an upfront initial payment ahead of the academic year. Today, the NSFAS announced that they have set aside more than 2-and a half-billion-rand to fund the registrations of students who were financially excluded between 2013 and 2015. Noma Bolani reports

Eskom is planning to make another application next year for an additional electricity price hike, a public hearing by the National Energy Regulator, Nersa, has heard in Durban. Eskom is applying for an 8-point-6 percent hike that will push the 2016 increase to over 16 percent. While Eskom is arguing it will help to improve economic stability, it has been criticised for poor planning. The sharp electricity price hikes over the past few years are increasingly pushing households to opt for renewable energy and go off-grid. Dries Liebenberg reports

Zimbabwe's constitutional court has delivered a landmark ruling outlawing all forms of child marriage.
