The statue of British colonialist, Cecil John Rhodes has been removed from its prime location at the University of Cape Town's upper campus. The statue sat perched on his plinth for 81 years overlooking the greater Cape Town area. Its removal came following an intense month-long campaign by university students calling for transformation of the University. The UCT council voted overwhelmingly to remove the statue to a safe place while Heritage Western Cape makes a final decision on its fate. Meanwhile, Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa was quoted as saying the ANC government could have done more since 1994, and they could have acted much quicker.
