The eThekwini Municipality has apologised to affected consumers who received inaccurate bills due to an error in the city's Indigent Policy. As many residents of residential flat units have received inflated water billing in their most recent eThekwini bills, the city has released a statement informing residents that 6 liters of water are available to households with an annual income of R250 000 and below. Many homes above this value have been given the free 6KL since 2020 in error. The municipality now plans to recover amounts credited to approximately 49,000 accounts. The family of Gerco Van Deventer, a South African man kidnapped by the Al Qaeda terrorist group, has confirmed that the 48-year-old has safely returned home and spent Christmas with his loved ones. Van Deventer was kidnapped by Al-Qaeda while working in Libya. For six years he was held prisoner and sold from one group to another. Gift of the Givers helped secure his release earlier this month. His wife, Shereen says they are grateful.

Two months ago, the Nelspruit Magistrate's court in Mpumalanga found that illegal mining was the primary cause of the collapse of the Lily Mine in 2016. The court also found that three workers who were trapped underground  - Pretty Nkambule, Yvonne Mnisi, and Solomon Nyirenda - died instantly when the mine caved in. This comes after an inquest was established to determine if the three were indeed deceased, and whether anyone should be held responsible for their deaths. Anglican Archbishop Thabo Makgoba has called on citizens to stand up against war and the abuse of power. He was delivering his annual Christmas eve sermon at the St  Georges's Cathedral in Cape Town. Makgoba was critical of the Hamas-Israel war and the the conflict in Sudan. As Mercedes Besent reports, the Anglican Archbishop was also scathing on the current State of the Nation of South Africa.

The electoral commission in the Democratic Republic of Congo has released partial results that show incumbent, President Felix Tshisekedi in the lead. Moise Katumbi, one of the main opposition candidates in Democratic Republic of Congo's 20 presidential election has called for the vote to be annulled because of massive fraud. Delays during Wednesday's election led to an extension of voting, which some opposition candidates and independent observers indicating it may compromise the credibility of the election.
