The Competition Commission has started to crack down on excessive pricing on essential items during the coronavirus pandemic. Yesterday, the commission yesterday laid charges of excessive pricing against Dis-Chem, with the Competition Tribunal for a maximum penalty after saying that its investigation found that Dis-Chem charged customers excessively for essential hygiene goods during the State of National Disaster. Babelegi Workwear Overall Manufacturers & Industrial Supplies was accused of overcharging for facial masks, by nearly 1 000%. Minister of Labour and Employment, Thulasi Nxesi, says some companies are not complying with the lockdown legislation and paying their workers government's contributions from the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF). Nxesi was briefing the Portfolio Committee on Employment and Labour and the Select Committee on Trade and Industry. He says the department has already paid UIF benefits to the tune of one-point-six billion rand, and over 600-thousand workers have benefited. The City of Cape Town's law enforcement officials are monitoring sporadic incidents of looting on the Cape Flats. At least two food truck drivers were injured following sporadic incidents of looting on Monday. There have been over 40 arrests.
