INTERVIEW: Grades 7 and 12 could resume schooling from May 6th. The Basic Education Department earlier briefed Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Basic Education and the Select Committee on Education on the status of schooling during lockdown. We now speak to Nomsa Cembi, spokesperson for teacher union SADTU.

Department of Basic Education's Director-General Mathanzima Mweli says they are working with the Department of Water and Sanitation to ensure schools have provision of water and sanitation facilities. Mweli says learners and teacher will be provided with personal protective equipment (PPEs) and he further added that social distancing and sanitizing measures will be put in place when learners return to school.

Meanwhile, National Teachers Union (Natu) president Allen Thompson says he does not foresee schools opening in early May, especially in KwaZulu-Natal, as eThekwini district is a "red zone" as a result of the virus was spreading at an alarming rate.
