Sammy Mhaule got his first taste of entrepreneurship as a 14 year old when he sold ice cream on the streets of Tembisa.

Today he supplies sparkling juice to supermarkets in Gauteng and Checkers in the Free State, but the journey from ice cream peddler to business owner hasn't always been smooth sailing.

With formal qualifications as a mechanical engineer and marketer

The idea for his products came from an opportunity to capitalise on South Africa hosting the 2010 Soccer World Cup by supplying non-sparkling juice to hotels.

Skyrule Drinks is based in Kempton Park. It was important for Mhaule to locate his business close to the community that nurtured him and today he employs ten people from the area. He describes the last year as tough, but very rewarding: Skyrule Drinks was among the top 20 at the 2018 South African Small Business Awards.

For Mhaule the best part of being an entrepreneur is the knowledge that his destiny is in his own hands.

The much-loved comic shot to widespread popularity during her stint on SABC’s So You Think You’re Funny in 2009 where she entered and came sixth in the competition.
 
She is also an accomplished writer and has written as a columnist for several community newspapers over the years. Her first Xhosa novel, Umbhodamo was published by Maskew Miller in 2013, to critical acclaim and is currently a setbook in the Eastern Cape for Grade 8 and 9.

Born in Whittlesea in the Eastern Cape, Khanyisa Bunu has always known she was funny. As a high school Geography and English teacher, a day wouldn’t go by when she didn’t get a kick out of making her students, or the teachers in the staffroom roar with laughter.

As a child, she was always the centre of attention, often regaling her family with stories of her mischievous comings and goings at boarding school.

She relocated to Johnnesburg in 2008 and in 2009, she decided to take a leap of faith and follow her talent, which saw her entering SABC 1’s reality TV show, “So You Think You Are Funny?”. Getting into the Top Six finals solidified her path, and she began to pursue a full-time career as a comedian, actress and entertainer.

INTERVIEW: 77% of medical-aid babies are now born via c-section which costs up to R42,000 a delivery. A new report by the Council for Medical Schemes found that the rate of c-sections was lower among members on comprehensive plans compared to hospital plans. The study found that 25% of c-sections to medical scheme members now cost more than R42,400 – compared to the price of a vaginal birth of between R16,900 to R25,400:
The average hospital visit was 67% more expensive for a c-section than for a vaginal delivery - R16,290 versus R27,086, respectively. The cost of medical specialist consultations for a c-section birth was almost 90% as expensive (R9,400 compared to less than R4,900). And the specialist prices are rising by almost 9% a year.
The CMS study found that the rate of c-sections was lower among members on comprehensive plans compared to hospital plans.
Hospital plans are cheaper than comprehensive plans, whose members are older and may have a “higher socioeconomic status (and) higher income levels” and therefore have better information about a c-section delivery, the study found.
But the CMS says that there are likely high levels of “medically unnecessary” c-sections among medical schemes. This is due to many factors, including the high rate of malpractice litigation when things go wrong in natural births. According to one expert, 98% of all legal claims related to obstetrics in South Africa involve vaginal births.
But the CMS also blames the low rate of natural births in part on the “high reimbursement rate” (presumably for hospitals and specialist healthcare providers), who can charge more for c-sections.
The CMS now wants urgent steps to reduce the incidence of c-sections among medical scheme members.
It wants an investigation into alternative mechanisms to finance maternity care, so that “appropriate” incentives are provided to healthcare providers.

A private security in KwaZulu Natal, Reaction Unit South Africa says in the past ten days they found at least eight bodies in and around Verulam, north of Durban. Reaction Unit South Africa says yesterday an unidentified body of a man with multiple gunshot wounds was discovered at Ndwedwe, while the remains of a severely burnt body was found along the M25, near KwaMashu. Statistics South Africa has just revealed that South Africa's gross domestic product (GDP) contracted by 1.4% in the fourth quarter of 2019, following a revised 0.8% contraction in the third quarter.
