  • Two officers arrested in connection with a Westbury murder
    The police ministry says it will not be releasing too much information about the role of two police officers stationed at the Sophiatown police station west of Johannesburg, who have been arrested in connection with the murder of 21 year old Bradley Sauls who was gunned down in Westbury in July. The officers are facing charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice. This brings to seven the number of people arrested for Saul's death. The latest breakthrough follows the deployment of a multi-disciplinary task team in Westbury as part of efforts to stabilise the area. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to the police's Brigadier Vish Naidoo.

  • EFF remains mum as VBS mutual bank scandal implicates its deputy president's brother
    The EFF remains mum about the involvement of its deputy president's brother in the looting of VBS mutual bank. The Reserve Bank has released a report written by advocate Terry Motau in which he details how Floyd Shivambu's sibling Brianand received R16 million from the bank hose doors are now closed. It is unclear why he received the money. The total amount looted amounts to R1.8 billion. Details in a forensic accountant report shows the money was gratuitously received from VBS by about 53 people between March 2015 and June 2018. The Provincial Treasurer of the ANC in Limpopo Danny Msiza, is alleged to be central in this heist. Motau has provided more details about the scheme.

  • Gupta naturalisation inquiry continues in Parliament
    The Home Affairs Portfolio Committe is to meet during Parliament's recess time in December, to accommodate a key witness, Ashu Chawla, in the inquiry who's currently in India. This has emerged during the committee's hearing into the naturalisation of the Gupta family, which resumed today. Chawla is the former COO of Sahara Computers, a Gupta-owned company which has now closed. The committee has learnt that Chawla is currently in New Delhi, but is expected to come to South Africa by the end of November. Chairperson Hlomani Chauke says Chawla has sent a a list of demands, including a business class flight ticket. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to our reporter Zalene Merrington.

  • Constitutional Court provides clarity on contested Immigration Directive 21 of 2015
    The Constitutional Court says there should not be a blanket approach when dealing with the issue of the Immigration Directive 21 of 2015. This relates to a case of four asylum seekers who sought to apply for temporary residence after their applications were rejected by the Department of Home Affairs. The applicants wanted the Immigration Directive of 2015 to be declared invalid and unlawful. The matter was taken to the apex court after the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the Department of Home Affairs. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Head of Strategic Litigation at Lawyers for Human Rights, Waynne Mncube.

  • Net1 denies violating recent Constitutional Court ruling
    Financial services provider Net1 Mobile Solutions says t is not violating a Constitutional Court ruling that cancelled its subsidiary, CPS's social grant payment contract with SASSA. Net1 has been visiting several villages across the country with mobile ATMs and disbursing social grants to SASSA beneficiaries. The Concourt earlier ruled that SASSA's contract with CPS was invalid and that it should be cancelled by the end of September. The South African Post Office has taken over social grant payments. However, CPS, through its banking services wings Grindrod Bank and Net1 Mobile has been paying social grants to beneficiaries. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Net1 CEO Herman Kotze.

  • United National Transport Union shocked that Railway Safety Regulator decision on PRASA permit is challenged in court
    The United National Transport Union (UNTU) says it is shocked that the Railway Safety Regulator's decision to revoke the safety permit of the Passenger Rail Agency PRASA is being challenged in court. The matter was brought by PRASA and will be heared in the high court in Pretoria on Thursday. The court had to provide temporary relief to PRASA after the regulator refused to issue a safety permit last week following an accident in Kempton Park on Friday. The regulator's decision would have affected 2 million train commuters. This is the second time since August this year, that the regulator has threatened not to issue PRASA with a permit due to serious safety concerns. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to General-Secretary of the United National Transport Union Steve Harris.
