Members of Parliament have told Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane that they feel she direspected them when she missed last week's meeting. Mkhwebane sent a letter of apology to Parliament a day before she was due to appear before the MPs, citing a family emergency. MPs tried to probe about the nature of the emergency and the details contained in the letter, however, chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Justice Mathole Motshekga said he would make the letter available at a later stage. Mkhwebane has since apologised for her absence.

Over a million football fans are expected in Russia for the Fifa World Cup. The opening ceremony will be held in Moscow tomorrow at about half-past-four South African time. In preparation for all those visitors and the beautiful game, the Russians have been practising how to smile. That's because smiling doesn't come naturally to them. A local Rate Payers' association in Koster has been granted permission to take control of the municipality's water and refuse systems "for as long as necessary". The landmark ruling puts control of key services in the hands of its citizens. Koster, together with the neighbouring towns of Derby and Swartruggens, is part of the Kgetlengrivier municipality in the North West, a province that is under administration. The interdict is the second granted to residents within a month. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Kobus Snyman of the Koster, Derby and Swartruggens tax payer's association.

The UDM leadership in the Eastern Cape has set up a team to investigate corruption and gate keeping in the party. This after the national leadership halted the regional elective conference of the OR Tambo this weekend. The leadership has established that some branch members were paid to vote for particular candidates and that party processes were not followed during branch meetings. Former SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng wants his job back as Group Corporate Affairs executive. This emerged at his CCMA hearing in Joburg where he is challenging the SABC's decision to remove him from his position as Chief Operations Officer. SABC board member Krish Naidoo has told the hearing that Motsoeneng has no place at the public broadcaster in either capacity because the COO position has been filled and the Corporate Affairs position was made redundant by the courts. US President Donald Trump and the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, have signed a joint agreement after their unprecedented talks in Singapore. While briefing the media, Trump said the process of full denuclearisation on the Korean Peninsula will begin 'very soon' but that the sanctions will remain.

A specialised task team from the Hawks have raided the offices of the Bank of Baroda in Johannesburg and Durban. This follows several allegations of money laundering and corruption against the Bank. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to the Hawks' Hangwani Mulaudzi.

It's reported that struggling state airline SAA is splurging millions on executives and consulting firms in a spending frenzy that has been described as "worrying". According to these reports, SAA''s recently appointed Chief Executive, Vuyani Jarana, said the increased expenditure is necessary to address a severe skills shortage. Its also reported that, just last week, SAA received yet another R5-billion bailout from the treasury. SAA CEO, Vuyanin Jarana has responded to these allegations.

The Vhembe district in Limpopo is experiencing a high rate of physical and sexual abuse of children. About 200 physical and sexual child abuse cases have been reported in this district alone since the beginning of the year. The Thohoyandou Victim Empowerment Programme says 60% of those affected are children under the age of 13. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to the Director of the programme Tshilidzi Masikhwa.
