The Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth has been shut down by students who are protesting over the lack of funding from the student financial aid scheme NSFAS.

Power utility ESKOM has assured South Africans that there will be no power outages this winter. There have been reports that ESKOM's coal stockpiles are running low.

A large group of Mangosuthu University of Technology students have stormed the Durban magistrate court carrying placards denouncing bail to a suspect arrested for killing a student. They want the court to deny bail to the former student who allegedly killed his ex-girlfriend Zolile Khumalo.

Sandile Mantsoe has been sentenced to an effective 32 years in prison. Mantsoe was found guilty yesterday in the High Court in Johannesburg on three charges, including the murder of his ex-lover Karabo Mokoena. Handing down sentence, Acting Judge Peet Johnson has said the sentence will send a strong warning that abusive conduct towards women will not be tolerated in society.

Police in KwaZulu Natal are monitoring the situation on the N3 in Mooi River in the Midlands closely this afternoon, after violent protests broke out. The protestors are accusing foreign nationals in the trucking industry of taking their jobs. More than twenty trucks were burnt down and over fifty protestors have been arrested. The MEC for Transport has condemned the violence. This was the second incident in three weeks. Sakina Kamwendo started by speaking to KZN Police Spokesperson Thembeka Mbhele.

Police in the North West are urging parents to monitor their children's movements during the violence-marred protests. Police say children are illegally blocking roads with objects and demanding cash from motorists. About three hundred and fourty people have been arrested after violent protests which were accompanied by looting, broke out last week. North West police spokesperson Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone provided Sakina Kamwendo with more information.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has slammed the Grindrod Bank for distributing what is says are misleading pamphlets which depict the bank's green card as one of SASSA's banking accounts of choice. SASSA says it has not been endorsed the card. The agency has given Grindrod Bank and Net1 five days to retract the pamphlet. SASSA accounts have for the last six years been held at the bank on behalf of Cash Paymaster Services (CPS), which used to pay out all the social grants. Trade union involved in the bus strike are meeting today. The nation wide strike is now in its 14th day. Talks between the unions and employers are still deadlocked even after a meeting with the Transport and Labour Department Ministers last week. SATAWU says the ministers did not help them at all. As South Africa celebrates Freedom Day, incidents of racism appear to be on the rise, raising concern about just how far the country has come in eradicating this scourge. This week, a group of white people were photographed hanging a life-size doll dressed in an ANC T-shirt and a picture of Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, on a tree outside the offices of the Basic Education Department in Pretoria. And last month, the Randburg Magistrate's Court sentenced former Real Estate Agent, Vicki Momberg, to an effective two years in prison for her racist tirade in 2016.
