Corruption Watch has confirmed that its founding board member and veteran trade union leader, Emma Mashinini, has died at the age of 87. Mashinini was the first General-Secretary of the Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers' Union in 1975. She co-founded the trade union federation, Cosatu, ten years later. Mashinini was at the fore-front of breaking racial job reservation; fighting for maternity and paternity rights; as well as ensuring a 40-hour working week. ANC structures in KwaZulu-Natal are calling on the party' senior leadership to remove outspoken party MP, Dr. Makhosi Khoza, from parliament. Khoza earlier indicated that she would defy the party's directive and vote according to her conscience during a vote of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma. The SACP says Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the party's congress in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg on Wednesday. This after the communists asked the ANC not to send President Jacob Zuma to deliver a keynote speech. About 2-thousand-500 delegates have converged in Boksburg for the the SACP's 14th national congress. The five-day gathering will among others discuss issues like the state of the faltering economy, alleged state capture by the controversial Gupta family and whether or not to go it alone in the 2019 general elections. National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete has filed an affidavit supporting the South African Reserve Bank's court application to set aside Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane's recent report and remedial actions. Parliament says Mbete has also asked the High Court in Johannesburg to allow her and Justice and Correctional Services portfolio committee chairman Mathole Motshekga to act as applicants in the case. In her report released last month, Mkhwebane ordered as a remedial action that the mandate of the SARB be changed from targeting inflation to promoting economic growth.

The Black First Land First (BLF) has threatened to continue with protest action should the media continue with what the organisation terms "racist reporting". BLF has also criticised the South African National Editors' Forum (SANEF) for grand standing and issued a warning that no one will take away their right to protest. This follows a court victory by SANEF stopping BLF from harassing journalists.

Stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, may be compromised following the announcement of a possible further election delay. The DRC's electoral commission says it is not possible to organize presidential elections by the end of this year. This is contrary to a political agreement which was made on the 31st of December last year with opposition parties, committing to hold elections within 2017. Elections in the country have been halted since Joseph Kabila's term in office ended in mid-December last year.
