  • Self-Mastery is the Ultimate Goal

What’s standing in the way of you reaching the level of success you desire, enjoying a great relationship, or seeing your abs for the first time? Is the problem that you don’t know enough? No. Is there too much competition? Not even close. The only obstacle is a lack of mastery over yourself. Don’t believe it?

    You will.

Are you in great shape? Do you only eat healthy foods? Why not? Is it because you’re confused about which foods are healthy and which are not? Are you confused about whether it’s better to exercise by running down the block or by sitting on the couch?

    Hardly.

You know enough to make significant changes in your life. Knowledge isn’t the challenge. The challenge is managing yourself and your behaviors.

Haven’t had a date in a year? Are you confused about how to get a date? The key to getting dates is to ask people out. How many people have you asked out in the last week? How many new people have you spoken to in the last week?

Are you able to say the things that need to be said? Are you able to be silent when you know you should? Can you make yourself go to the gym or eat an apple instead of a piece of apple pie?

Mastering yourself is the only goal you need to achieve. From that, you can achieve all your other goals!

Use these strategies to become the master of yourself:

    1. Make a list of the things you should do each day, but aren’t. This list might include things like exercising, playing the piano for 20 minutes, drinking eight glasses of water, paying your bills, flossing, and making social connections.
    2. Make a list of the things you do each day, but shouldn’t. Maybe you stay up too late, watch too much TV, waste time playing video games, smoke, and show up late to work. Think about all the things you do that sacrifice your health, career, finances, social life, and happiness.
    3. Begin by addressing one item from each list. Slowly eliminate one of the negative items and add one of the positive items. Habits are challenging to change, but you’ve developed habits without even trying. Imagine what you can accomplish intentionally.
    4. Have a long-term focus. Negative behaviors have short-term rewards. Eating ice cream or watching TV are rewarding immediately. They can be harmful in the long-term, but they pay off right now.
    5. Adopt a long-term focus and consider the long-term implications of your behavior before you indulge in it. What will it cost you down the road if you don’t change?
    6. Realize that your body is the enemy. Why does a person eat a bag of potato chips instead of an orange? He imagines himself eating chips. Then he imagines eating an orange. Then he chooses the one that feels better. But your body is deceiving you. It’s only concerned with safety and reproduction.
    7. It cares little for your longevity or your long-term prospects. Humans seek pleasure, just like any other animal. The advantage humans have over animals is the ability to make decisions and not follow instinct. The disadvantage humans have is the ability to create pleasurable foods and activities that are detrimental to long-term success and survival.

Self-mastery is the key. If you can master yourself, everything else becomes easy. It’s easy to get ahead at work. It’s easy to be healthy. It’s easy to save money and maintain relationships. Can you master yourself? Key your attention on the long-term impact of behaviors and avoid short-term pleasures that lead to long-term challenges.

    8. The Entrance Into Society

The desire of pleasing is, of course, the basis of social connexion. Persons who enter society with the intention of producing an effect, and of being distinguished, however clever they may be, are never agreeable. They are always tiresome, and often ridiculous. Persons, who enter life with such pretensions, have no opportunity for improving themselves and profiting by experience. They are not in a proper state to observe: indeed, they look only for the effect which they produce, and with that they are not often gratified. They thrust themselves into all conversations, indulge in continual anecdotes, which are varied only by dull disquisitions, listen to others with impatience and heedlessness, and are angry that they seem to be attending to themselves. Such men go through scenes of pleasure, enjoying nothing. They are equally disagreeable to themselves and others. Young men should, therefore, content themselves with being natural. Let them present themselves with a modest assurance: let them observe, hear, and examine, and before long they will rival their models.

    9. Develop your prosperity consciousness Change your life

Prosperity consciousness is a way of thinking that gives you more power over what you have in your life. It's a concept popularized by New Age thinking, but it's a principle that's been around for a long time. Developing your prosperity consciousness requires a few key things that, once you truly understand them, can change your life.

To understand the concept, you need to understand the basics of the law of attraction. This universal law basically states that like attracts like. Think of old adages like "you reap what you sow" and "like birds flock together". They all express the law of attraction in a familiar way.

If you make one bad financial decision after another, you will lose money and get into financial trouble. Making those bad financial decisions is the result of not thinking about money correctly and in the way necessary to attract more money to you. Developing a prosperity consciousness will help you see money differently, and end up with more of it.

You have to realize that prosperity is not based on chance or luck. This is the first step. Because if it's just luck or chance, then you wouldn't be able to control it, but you can. And you also need to realize that there is enough to go around. There should be no guilt associated with prosperity because no one has to do without it for you to have what you want.

One of the tenets of prosperity consciousness and the law of attraction is that the universe creates everything in abundance. And that you can have what you want if you just believe it is possible and focus on that belief.

Once you decide that money and prosperity are not things you achieve through luck or by taking from others, you decide that they are things you can have without guilt. That belief will automatically steer you away from bad decisions because you won't feel you have to fight to get your share before someone else takes it.

There is no need to fight or compete for it, as there is enough to go around. You really need to focus on that thought and make sure you believe it to develop a prosperity consciousness that allows things to flow in your life.

Once you believe it, then you just have to welcome prosperity. Whether you pray or affirm or ask the universe in general for the things you want, you must make the invitation for those things to come into your life. In doing so, you create an aura around you of openness and acceptance of the abundance and prosperity you say you want.

The principle is like magnetic attraction. You want to attract certain positive things, so you surround yourself with positivity because like attracts like. If you doubt that you can get something, you attract more doubt.

But if you believe that something can be yours through developing prosperity consciousness, then you can attract that very thing to you.

    10. How to create abundance in your life now

Creating abundance is not always done with smart business decisions, wise investments and betting on the right horse at the track. While those things may be part of making financial gains because they demonstrate belief in the act of trying to get more money, you don't have to have money to start creating abundance.

If that goes against most teachings when it comes to money, especially the cliché that to make money you have to spend money, then it's time to start looking at money and prosperity differently. In those examples, every act required money to begin with. But if you look closer, they have something else in common.

In each of those acts the person is basically acting on faith that they can benefit from what they are doing. The person who bets on a horse has faith that his horse can win and give him a financial gain. The person who invests in a business or in the stock market has faith that the decision can make him money.

Everyone is aware that there is a risk in using these methods to create abundance. However, they do so with the faith that it can work for them, and with the hope that it will. It is that act of faith and that belief that is far more important in these examples than the fact that they had money to lose to begin with.

Not everyone who makes a risky business decision profits financially. And not every horse can win. So there is no way that all people, no matter how much belief they have, can make money this way. However, creating abundance in your own life is possible, and it does not require, as in the case of the better horse, that others lose so that you can win.

Most important is the belief that the universe provides in abundance. There is more than enough for everyone. No one has to go hungry so that another can eat; no one has to lose so that another can gain. There is enough for everyone, but everyone doesn't know it and so many have to have little.

Once you begin to believe that there is enough for you without that meaning there is less for someone else, then you free the way for you to begin to create abundance in your life. And once you believe that you don't need to spend money to make money, you have removed another obstacle that holds many back.

Simply by allowing yourself to see money and prosperity differently, and choosing to believe that what you think about can affect what you have, you can change your life. If you think positive thoughts, you will attract positivity. If you allow yourself to believe that you can have what you want, you open the door to getting it.

Practice every day deciding that you can have the things you believe you can have. Using positive thinking and this type of belief are the most important steps to creating abundance in your life.
