Hoda Khamosh is a writer, journalist, poet, and activist.
She was born in Iran, but moved back to Afghanistan with her parents where she lived until August, 2021, when she had to flee her home country shortly after the Taliban had taken over.
Here, she speaks in Persian to Radio Aula Mundi from her host country, Norway.
Due to her activism for women’s rights, Hoda Khamosh was appointed by the BBC one of the 100 most influential women in Afghanistan in 2021…
In an open letter to the Supreme Court of the United States, Hoda Khamosh would start with a complaint about the shape her country is in since the Taliban have seized power.
She would further criticize the way the Taliban were allowed to take over.
It’s all the result of mismanagement and the disastrous manner in which American soldiers were pulled out of Afghanistan.
Negotiations with the Taliban had been going on for a year in Doha, Qatar.
As a result of all this, freedom of speech, democracy, and women’s rights vanished from one day to the next.
And those are the very rights and freedoms the United States had promised to establish in Afghanistan after the attacks of September 11.
And all these things are in vain now.
So, in her letter to the Supreme Court of the United States, Hoda Khamosh would say that a ban on abortion is bad enough.
Then, she continues…
“Just look at the situation in Afghanistan which your government has created…”
“Your actions are threatening freedom and democracy not only in America or in Afghanistan, but in the whole world.”
“With regard to the restrictions of women’s rights, an abortion ban due to a decision by the Supreme Court of the United States would not only harm American women, but along with it, send a signal to the Taliban that would eventually deprive women AND men in Afghanistan of any rights whatsoever.”
