To paraphrase what Private Pyle said at the end of the first act of Full Metal Jacket, "We are. In a world. Of s**t." We are facing existential threats of climate change, overpopulation, war, famine, drought, more severe natural disasters, economic uncertainty, social injustice and divisiveness... the list goes on. Mental health issues like depression and anxiety are on the rise as a result, and children are growing up in a world that might seem like a hopeless exercise of futility, and watching their parents and adults experience and talk about all of this. As adults in their lives, we are in a unique position to help children understand the world they're living in and what they can do about it. Given the barrage of content available on all fronts, it's important that we help them navigate information and that we communicate the reality of the situation to them in a way they can understand - a way that won't terrify them. In this episode, we explore how to talk about these things on a level children can comprehend and respond to.

Communication Matters, with Brian and Shauna Smith, is about communication and the human condition. A mental health counselor and speech-language pathologist discuss the vastness of communication and relationships, and provide tips and tricks for improving interpersonal communication skills. This all while being a married couple barbing, bickering, and bantering on these topics without killing each other on the air.
