A sympathetic smile, an empathetic ear... what's the difference? Is that pity or compassion? Do we need to vent, do we want advice? Are those words of comfort or meaningless platitudes? Offering support to those we care about can be tricky and a little uncomfortable, and when we are struggling, we might not know what we need; when we get something we don't need, it can be frustrating. In this episode we delve into how to offer, seek, and accept support, and hopefully pull some of the uncertainty about how to best respond when there's not a problem to solve.

Look, we need to talk... Most of us don't like negative feedback, even if we say we welcome it. When it's presented as criticism and blame, layers of relational obstacles and distractions are added. In this episode, we'll explore how to hear negative feedback, what to do with it, how to respond, and -- most importantly -- how to shift the conversation away from criticism and blame.

We all have had moments -- or are dreading future moments -- when we need to have a hard conversation. These are usually ones where we're worried about hurting someone's feelings or disrupting status quo. Maybe we have to deliver some difficult news. What if they take it personally? What if they become upset? What if they let it impact the relationship? Most importantly, what if we don't have the conversation? In this episode we explore some of the thoughts and emotions that might spool up our anxiety and get in the way of having these conversations in a productive way or at all, and suggest some ideas about how to have them as painlessly as possible.

It sure would be nice if people would be more direct... Why do we do this? Many of us tend to drop hints or beat around the bush in an effort to be polite or unobtrusive rather than asking for what we want or need, and this can be a frustrating process for all parties involved. In this episode we directly address some of the reasons why we communicate this way, and suggest a few ways to be more clear (without being rude, of course).

If anything about this episode makes you feel uncomfortable, you can ask us to stop. Then maybe we can repair any damage to the relationship. Of course we mean no offense (and hope none was taken), but the point is situations happen often in which we may feel hurt, offended, or uncomfortable, and we don't always see these as opportunities to address our concerns. Relationship repair might sometimes follow a boundary violation, and setting a boundary can be part of that repair; see how far Brian can push Shauna's boundaries before he needs some repair...

We hear terms like misinformation, conspiracy theories, cognitive bias, and so on, and are told we should be wary of these things, by vetting sources and doing good research, but someone who doesn’t have a background in research and research methods might not know how they are supposed to tackle this effectively and responsibility. Fundamentally, how do we really know what we know? And how do we communicate what we know effectively? Dr. David Walker will be joining us as our guest to discuss how we process and manage information. Dr. Walker is professor of history at Boise State University and teaches classes in military and diplomatic history, specializing in US Military history, World War II, the History of Firearms and Tactics, the History of WMD, and International Terrorism. In addition, he teaches World History and the Introduction to History Methods and Historiography. Together, we explore the question, "How do we know?" in this edition of Communication Matters.

In honor of Shauna's birthday, we're taking a trip down memory lane, back in time to the mystical pre-internet days when the existential threats, like the Cold War, were more fun, and we could turn out alright after learning to be independent at 11 years old as latchkey kids, drinking from a hose while riding in the back of a pickup truck - all the stuff Gen X is proud of... Anyway, today we'll be talking about how the 1980s and '90s shaped Gen X and Millennials' worldview, communication styles, and their own particular brand of emotional regulation (somewhere between bottling up for strength and therapy's okay). It'll be a wild ride of self indulgence or whatever.
