What do you think of when the name Laura Ashley is mentioned? Green shops with no character making bland cloths and safe furniture in muted colours all very safe and corporate.

Laura Ashley’s vision was very different from the retailing conglomerate we know now. Laura Ashley had a vision: Go back home and create hand made cotton clothes dyed with natural colours and made up in her own factory in rural wales. She gave jobs to the community especially women who were encouraged to leave early and collect the children from school. Laura’s pattern cutter was an ex sheep shearer, what better person to do this exacting work. Laura loved families, beauty and hankered for the past. She actually was a girl from suburbia who had been in the Wren’s during the war…tragically she died in 1984. Hear the whole story passionately told by author Anne Sebba who is the only person to have written an authorised biography of Laura.

Charlotte Johnson Wahl is the mother of four exeptionally talented children, the most famous of whom is the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. Charlotte has a much lower public profile than the children’s father, Stanley Johnson yet she is an artist of real stature and those who have met her can tell exactly where Boris’s charm has come from. Radio Gorgeous listeners are immensely privileged to be able to hear her voice and her life story as she gives a rare personal interview.

Deborah Cohen is an American historian who specialises in social history. Her latest book is FAMILY SECRETS: Living with Shame from the Victorians to the Present Day. On a Liverpool platform a heartbroken mother hands over her bastard child for adoption. In an Edinburgh town house a grandmother frets that the darkening shadow on her charge’s upper lip will give away her Eurasian heritage. Or a Cotwolds vicar who chronicles his sexual longings for other men and banks his diary in a vault, sewed up in calico and wrapped up in parchment.

Drawing upon her own research Deborah offers sweeping and often surprising accounts of how shame has changed over the last 2 centuries.
