  • Smooth 70s Close
Digital stations come and go at a faster rate than their analogue counterparts. A little like shops on a high street. Even more so now as the UK's fairly limited DAB capacity is re-jigged with the objective of availability for all, rather than a luxury of choice for some. Each distinctive one though attracts its own loyal audience which understandably misses it when it waves farewell.
Smooth 70s was launched as a brand extension of Smooth Radio on 27 December 2011 on DAB and online. It played its last songs just before midnight on Saturday October 5th 2013, chosen fondly by its staff. Its last Rajar audience figures reported a UK audience of 730,000 adults.

  • RadioMoments Review 4th Oct 2013
Each week, the fine Radio Academy podcast features interviews and content from the world of radio at http://www.radioacademy.org/podcasts/.
The Academy podcast concludes with a slice of audio memories from the radio week in history, as they invite me to assemble a weekly compendium of my daily #radiomoments tweets @davidlloydradio, with audio and narrative.
Here's just that #radiomoments weekly review on its own, for the week ending 4th October 2013, without the sensible Academy interviews and discussion.
This audio is now also heard at the end of the excellent weekly @radiotoday podcast http://audioboo.fm/channel/radiotoday

  • Charlotte Green's debut on the Classifieds
Charlotte Green slides into this gig likes a hand into a silken glove. A marriage made in heaven; and the obvious, yet inspired, choice to replace James Alexander Gordon.
This is all about tone and rhythm; and Charlotte's impeccable delivery positions her beautifully, having sailed on from her Radio 4 newsreader and continuity duties after 34 years. She has also emerged as a national treasure, much-loved by listeners who will now relish the poetry of this radio landmark feature whether or not they care about Manchester United. The question is, will she ever break out into her familiar infectious laughter. Her public awaits.
Listen here to Charlotte confess, on Newsnight, her desire to do this job; then open up about her feelings as reality dawns.
Finally, enjoy a slice of her typically flawless debut after the final whistle on 28th September 2013. I just adore the way she says 'three', with that delicious trill. Soon, we won't ever be able to imagine the scores being delivered by a bloke.

  • Radio 390 - ID and closedown
Another one of those sixties pirate stations, offering a fruity alternative to Auntie. This powerful station, though, was softer and sweeter than most – 'aimed at housewives whilst their husbands are out at work'.
On-air from 65-67, Radio 390 operated not from a ship, but from a fort in the Thames Estuary. Therein lay the problem: when a court concluded that the distance, not from the English shore, but from a nearby sandbank determined that the station operated from within territorial waters, the end was nigh.

  • FOOC - 25th anniversary programme
At the Beeb, they call it FOOC. 'From Our Own Correspondent' might be seen as an old-fashioned title were it attached to a new programme now, but it's become normalised over the years, since its first edition in 1955. To this day, the programme delivers inspired insight into an ever more complicated World
This is radio doing what radio does best, storytelling. The BBC's skilled and often cautiously brave correspondents around the world share insight. They relate their stories in the way they might tell a friend, sometimes a personal perspective on what it's like being at the centre of a major news story, at other times just a delicious random insight into a world far away. Whichever essay it is, this programme makes great use of the BBC's staff deployed around the world to create genuinely thoughtful radio.
It's broadcast now, in different versions, on both Radio 4 and the World Service. This audio is an extract from a programme produced to mark FOOC's 25th anniversary.
