  • 'Sounds Good' on Radio London from 1983 - jingle documentary
There’s no shortage of features on programmes about radio jingles. From the lengthy discussion on Radio 4’s Midweek featuring Jon from JAM to Tony Blackburn on Radio 4 explaining why Radio 1 really should not give up sung jingles. And what of the many stations which chose to air the famous JAM jingle song in full. I’m no stranger to this jingle crime, having featured in several late night lengthy incestuous asides on-air with the presenter as I descended to the studio to load a fresh new package ready for its first airing the following day.
Enjoy here a lengthy 1983 feature on jingles, culled from a Radio London show called ‘Sounds Good’. And it did.

  • Final John Peters programme on Radio Trent 23rd Sept 1988
Last shows, if you're allowed to do them, are usually really good or really bad.
Enjoy here the last John Peters breakfast show on Radio Trent in Nottingham. He's been a regular on the show off and on for 13 years, and had been the voice who'd launched the station in July 1975. John was off to the new GEM.AM on the AM frequencies on which Trent had squatted.
Enjoy here the old John UBN sound, fast and slick, mixed with last day of term irreverence and typical conversation with long-suffering newsreader, Phil Dixon, who understood little of what John said. Loads of local advertising, and surprisingly little national; a little early co-funding and Alfasound jingles help to colour this bit of lovely eighties ILR.

  • Radio 1 Pepper Tanner jingles
One purely for the jingle anoraks here. Radio 1's Pepper Tanner stuff, late 60s into the 70s. Some great cuts here, but I am sure most would concede that just maybe they are not the best name-checks ever. Enjoy some brass work parts at the end.

  • Joyous Jingles
Fourteen sparkling minutes of festive jingles. Whatever the format, whoever the production company, Christmas is a time when idents can be the most fun and undeniably indulgent. After all, if you can’t jingle at Christmas, when can you?
MVO: "Anoraks will be able to identify each jingle house on this cracker of a medley: from Alfasound's tinsel to the WB Tanner brass; from fruity JAM to that trademark TM sound; from the wisdom of Wise Buddah to perfect PAMS and mickey-taking Music4. For the rest of us, dangle coloured leader tape from your tree; undo that bottle of sherry (FX), turn the big light off (FX), the fairy lights on (Alfasound zing) and enjoy". (with tape echo)

  • Coke radio soap 'Claudia' - episode first aired on Christmas Eve in 1924
Having used print since 1885, Coke embraced the new medium of radio by the 1920s. A singer called Jessica Dragonette became ‘Vivian, the Coca Cola Girl’ on WEAF in New York.
Through the next three decades and long before McCann-Erickson created the famous musical spot ads, Coke sponsored all manner of entertainment shows. Just like the detergent manufacturers whose sponsoring of soap operas lent them their name, Coke was bringing original drama to radio. Enjoy this 15’ episode of the ‘Claudia’ drama, produced by the D'Arcy ad Agency in St. Louis, first aired on Christmas Eve 1924.
And. Whilst your're listening. Refresh yourself. With a Coke.

  • Attack on RNI ship - 29th August 1970
Radio Northsea International (RNI) was the most dramatic of the offshore pirate stations. Born at a time when Radio 1 was established, but commercial radio was yet to come from a cautious Government, the station powered out from its colourful ship, the Mebo II.
The law was not its only adversary, as can be heard here, from 29th August 1970. A business dispute ended up with visits to the ship from those who sought to cut its anchor chain and tow it into harbour, threatening the use of water cannons by means of persuasion. Given this was a radio ship, running commentary of the drama unfolded on air, bringing help swiftly alongside, thanks in no small way to the persistence of the station's listeners calling for help on RNI's behalf. It truly is compelling listening.
Dubbed from spool, thanks to Steve Merike.
