  • Top 20 - Radio 1 - November 1972
For a generation, this was the sound that bridged a happy school-free weekend and the smell of ironing and Sing Something Simple. The Sunday evening BBC chart on Radio 1 with chocolate-voiced Tom Browne.
Back then, it was simply a two hour Top 20, with Tom introducing the songs one by one. No fannying around, just announcements, random sound effects, ‘Number Twenny’ number jingles; and a compulsory husky female VO now and again. Add in the Osmonds, Stylistics and Gilbert O’Sullivan and you’re back there in November 1972, when this was recorded by a friend of mine on a cheap cassette. Witness too the Radio 2 jingles at the end, as the FM frequencies were handed back to Mother.

  • RadioMoments review 15th August 2014
Each week, the fine Radio Academy podcast features interviews and content from the world of radio at http://www.radioacademy.org/podcasts/.
The Academy podcast concludes with a slice of audio memories from the radio week in history, as they invite me to assemble a weekly compendium of my daily #radiomoments tweets @davidlloydradio, with audio and narrative.
Here's just that #radiomoments weekly review on its own, for the week ending 15th August 2014, without the sensible interviews and discussion.
This audio is now also heard at the end of the excellent weekly @radiotoday podcast http://audioboo.fm/channel/radiotoday

  • Radio Durham answerphone
Years ago, there was a lot of intervention in phone calls. Often a Post Office/GO (as British Telecom was back then) operator would plug you in to the desired number on your request. But when the call is then answered by a new fangled answerphone, then the confusion begins for this chap seeking to leave some sports results for the new and short-lived BBC Radio Durham.

  • Michael Bukht interview
A leading commercial radio figure, Michael Bukht OBE died in 2011.
In the dark days of the early 70s, Michael was the first Programme Controller proper of Capital Radio. He was also MD at Invicta, a GWR Programme Director and, notably, a visionary co-founder of Classic FM.
As the Crafty Cook, Michael Barry became a TV favourite on BBC2 with ‘Food and Drink’.
In this conversation with Mike Owen, hear Michael tell - in his engaging, fruity, no-nonsense style - of those tough early Capital days, the National Broadcasting School, the Classic FM birth, ‘public service radio’, his views on media courses, the CBC challenge, the GWR days, the early Gold splitting. And about radio’s role in ‘making the world a better place’.

  • 'The death has been announced of Diana, Princess of Wales.'
Everyone remembers where they were the moment they heard the news of the death of Princess Diana. Hear here the Radio 4 news bulletin the Nation woke to on Sunday 31st August 1997, a bulletin carried across BBC radio. The very joining together of all radio services, as the Corporation does in extremis, was a powerful symbol.

  • Tomasz Schafernaker ·corpses at Sooty
When that laughter bubbles, it's tough to stop it. As regular culprit, Tomasz Schafernaker, finds out at dawn on July 30th 2014 on Radio 4. Mind you, when Stephen Fry and Sooty are the cause, it's not surprising. Maritime listeners may have been a tad taken aback.
