In Lawrence County, the City of New Castle is moving forward with long-awaited plans to redevelop the iconic former Shenango China property. City Council will vote Thursday on whether to advertise for bids on the thirty-four-acre site, which the city officially acquired following decades of legal and environmental hurdles. Mayor Mark Elisco indicates a potential buyer is already in mind to return the industrial site to productive use.

Over in Mahoning County, jury selection is underway for the third time in a 2023 Youngstown murder case following two previous mistrials caused by improper witness testimony. Twenty-one-year-old Darnell Jones faces charges of aggravated murder and burglary for the fatal shooting of Ty’Lend Lewis.

And in Butler County, state police have charged a Valencia man following a pursuit and suspected drunk driving incident. Authorities report forty-four-year-old Jason Droske fled a traffic stop on Three Degree Road before officers brought his vehicle to a stop on Adair Avenue, where he subsequently failed field sobriety tests.

In Chemung County court news, a fifty-year-old Ashland man faces twenty years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted predatory sexual assault. The Chemung County District Attorney's Office reports Warren Morrison pleaded guilty to the violent felony charge following an investigation by the Sheriff's Office into the sexual abuse of several young girls over a four-year period. As part of the plea deal, Morrison will also serve ten years of post-release supervision and be required to register as a sex offender.

As summer winds down, Chemung County officials are announcing end-of-season schedule changes for local recreational facilities. The Harris Hill pool will officially close for the year at seven p.m. on Friday, August twenty-first, though season pass holders can continue using their passes at Park Station, where waterfront access and seasonal services will remain open daily through Labor Day.

And the Chemung County Buildings and Grounds Department is preparing for fall. Officials announce that reservations for winter storage of campers, boats, and vehicles at the Chemung County Fairgrounds will officially open on September ninth at seven a.m., with storage space assigned on a first-come, first-served basis for the season running from mid-October through April.

A local musician is taking his message of hope to Times Square to fight the fentanyl crisis. Hornell Alstom employee and Rushford native Nickalus Linza released his new single "Backwoods for Days" to honor a friend's cousin who died of an accidental fentanyl overdose. Linza was invited to perform the song live in New York City as part of a national event hosted by the non-profit Facing Fentanyl, with the single officially dropping on all streaming platforms August twenty-first for National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day.

State police are investigating a serious crash that left two Rochester residents hospitalized in the town of Wayland. Investigators report twenty-three-year-old Liz Maldonado failed to negotiate a curve on West Naples Street Sunday afternoon, crossing lanes and striking multiple trees and a home. Both Maldonado and her passenger suffered serious injuries and were transported to regional hospitals, with troopers looking into reports of reckless driving prior to the crash.

And in Cattaraugus County, the American Red Cross is assisting ten people after a devastating Sunday morning fire in East Randolph. Fire crews responded around four a.m. to a mixed-use building on Main Street housing apartments and a pizza shop. The building was ultimately destroyed by the blaze, but emergency officials report all occupants were able to escape safely.

In top state news, public health officials across New York are ramping up response efforts as the measles outbreak expands further into central and western regions. County health departments in Seneca and Allegany counties confirmed new positive cases involving unvaccinated residents—bringing total confirmed cases linked to regional exposure networks into double digits. State health officials urge unvaccinated residents to consult healthcare providers and advise anyone displaying symptoms to call medical clinics ahead of time to help contain airborne transmission.

In Western New York, Niagara Falls remains under a citywide State of Emergency heading into its second month. Mayor Robert Restaino warns that ongoing budget gridlock with the city council has left essential municipal services underfunded, impacting public safety, roadway repairs, and critical infrastructure maintenance as council members consider calling a special session to address the crisis.

Turning to public safety, state and local law enforcement are conducting a major arson investigation in Rochester following a massive five-alarm blaze that destroyed much of the Pallet Factory on Lyell Avenue. Police are currently working to identify a person of interest seen in the area before the inferno. Meanwhile, in Onondaga County, state police arrested a fifty-four-year-old Auburn man who barricaded himself inside a Camillus gas station, threatened workers, and set the building on fire during an intense weekend standoff.

In Steuben County court news, a forty-four-year-old Bath man is facing a fourteen-count felony indictment related to child pornography. Joseph Lawrence was remanded to the county jail on ten-thousand-dollars bail following a joint investigation by Bath Police, Steuben County Sheriff's deputies, and the State Police Computer Crimes Unit that began after an online "predator" confrontation.

And in local education news, State Senator Michelle Hinchey’s office has launched a district-wide back-to-school drive running through August twenty-eighth, collecting backpacks, classroom supplies, and calculators at regional drop-off locations to assist local families ahead of the new school year.

RNN PA NEWS ROUNDUP 08/17/26

A man is facing charges after he allegedly shot his brother.  Old Lycoming police say 26-year-old Levi Johnson shot his brother in the chest during a confrontation at a home on the 19-hundred block of Lycoming Creek Road Saturday morning.  He reportedly claims the shooting was in self-defense.  The victim was taken to the hospital, but has since been released.

Authorities believe a deadly crash in Montour County Friday evening was caused by a medical emergency.  Investigators say a man may have suffered a medical incident before his vehicle went off I-80 East and drove into nearby brush.  The man, identified as Randall Cassidy Junior, was pronounced dead.  Police say Cassidy's wife and their dogs were passengers in the vehicle, but were able to escape unharmed.

An investigation is underway after a deadly fire in Carbon County this past weekend.  Officials say one person was found dead inside a burning home on the 400 block of Cherry Hill Road in Franklin Township late Saturday night.  The person has not been identified.

Penn State hit a major milestone this past weekend.  The university awarded its one-millionth-degree during summer commencement ceremonies at the main campus in State College.  PSU was founded in 1855 as the Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania and awarded its first bachelor degrees to 11 graduates in 1861.  Governor Josh Shapiro issued a statewide proclamation marking the occasion and recognizing the contributions Penn State has made to the Commonwealth.

 A suspect is in custody in connection with the deadly mass shooting at Lexington's Charles Young Park over the weekend.  Lexington police have confirmed 18-year-old Jametrius Griffin was arrested on murder and other charges yesterday.  Authorities say 16-year-old Di'Zhon Robertson was killed in the shooting during the Eastend Days event Saturday evening and four other people were hurt.  Those who are injured are a four-year-old, a 14-year-old, and two adults.

One 16-year-old is dead and another is in custody following a shooting in Bowling Green.  Local police say Biak Hmung was found dead at a home on Woodbridge Lane around 8 p.m. Friday.  The other juvenile was taken into custody on reckless homicide charges, according to officials.  The incident remains under investigation.

An Elizabethtown woman is accused of vandalizing the World War Two Memorial in Washington, DC.  The U.S. Justice Department announced federal charges against Melissa Farris on Friday.  Officials say Farris spray-painted the phrase "clean hands, dirty money" using a dollar sign on a portion of the memorial last Thursday.  She also reportedly posted a video of herself on social media admitting to the vandalism and claiming she did it to draw attention to a "whistleblower" case.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear says he's heard nothing back from Senator Mitch McConnell following requests for an update on his health.  Tammy Trujillo reports.

Fayette County Schools Superintendent Demetrus Liggins is retiring.  Liggins made the announcement last Friday, saying the school district's Moody's Rating downgrade last week was the "last straw" for his employment with the school system.  He has been on administrative leave since June after the school board said he submitted a letter of resignation, which he claims is not true.  Liggins says he was working to address "decades of fiduciary irregularities" within Fayette County Public Schools before he was placed on leave.

          A 16-YEAR-OLD BOY IS DEAD FOLLOWING A SHOOTING FRIDAY NIGHT IN BOWLING GREEN.
          POLICE OFFICERS RESPONDED TO WOODBRIDGE LANE, WHERE THEY FOUND 16-YEAR-OLD BIAK HMUNG SUFFERING FROM A FATAL GUNSHOT WOUND. AUTHORITIES ARRESTED ANOTHER TEENAGER IN CONNECTION WITH THE INCIDENT, BUT DETECTIVES SAY THE SHOOTING APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN ACCIDENTAL.

          THEN, SATURDAY NIGHT, A MAN WAS SHOT AND IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION.  STATE POLICE RESPONDED TO ROCKY HILL ROAD JUST AFTER 6P.M., WHERE THEY FOUND 58-YEAR-OLD JAMES KEVIN MARR WITH GUNSHOT WOUNDS TO HIS ABDOMEN AND LEGS. MARR WAS AIRLIFTED TO A NASHVILLE HOSPITAL FOR EMERGENCY CARE. 
          AUTHORITIES SAY A SUSPECT IS BEING QUESTIONED AS THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES.

          LEXINGTON POLICE HAVE ARRESTED AN 18-YEAR-OLD MAN IN CONNECTION WITH SATURDAY'S FATAL MASS SHOOTING AT A CITY PARK.
          JAMETRIUS GRIFFIN IS CHARGED WITH MURDER AND FOUR COUNTS OF ASSAULT AFTER GUNFIRE ERUPTED DURING THE EAST END CELEBRATION AT CHARLES YOUNG PARK. AUTHORITIES SAY 16-YEAR-OLD DI'ZHON ROBERTSON WAS KILLED IN THE SHOOTING. 
          FOUR OTHERS—INCLUDING A FOUR-YEAR-OLD AND A 14-YEAR-OLD—WERE INJURED AND REMAIN IN THE HOSPITAL WITH NON-LIFE-THREATENING INJURIES. GRIFFIN IS CURRENTLY BEING HELD IN THE FAYETTE COUNTY DETENTION CENTER.
