  • In memoriam: Charter 77 spokeswoman, novelist and ‘enemy of the state’ Zdena Tominová
Czech author Zdena Tominová, a Charter 77 spokeswoman who immigrated to
England after the communist government declared her an “enemy of the
state”, has died at the age of 79. Together with her husband, the
philosopher Julius Tomin, she was among the very first signatories of the
human rights petition. Despite being hounded by the secret police, the
banned writer continued to spread samizdat in Czechoslovakia until she went
into exile, after being stripped of her citizenship.

  • “Having 10 percent of guests does not even cover running costs” – Czech hotels face year of low demand
Hotels in the Czech Republic are allowed to reopen this Monday as part of
the final wave of easing of coronavirus lockdown measures on businesses.
However, with travel restrictions still in place, the situation in the
Czech tourism sector is by no means back to normal. I spoke to the
President of the Confederation of Trade and Tourism of the Czech Republic
Tomáš Prouza and asked him if the hoped for increase in domestic tourism
will help relieve some of the pressure.

Although the coronavirus infection rate is continuing to follow a downward
trend in the country, a recent outbreak in the Silesian coal mine of Darkov
has seen the virus spread at an alarming rate. As of Friday morning 150
cases had been found among the miners, their families and the surrounding
population. Nevertheless, mining work continues, albeit with tougher

  • Website puts spotlight on waves of Czechoslovaks interned in notorious Soviet Gulag
Thousands of Czechoslovak citizens were among those who passed through the
vast network of brutal Soviet labour camps known as the Gulag. In recent
years Prague’s Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes has
carried out extensive research into this little-known historical chapter
    – and has just shared its findings via a brand new website. I spoke to
the Institute’s Adam Hradilek, who said Czechoslovaks had ended up in the
    Gulag in several waves.

  • Prague City Tourism shifts the focus to domestic tourists
At the start of the year Prague was gearing up for another record tourist
season, but as the coronavirus pandemic hit, the city’s tourist figures
plummeted. Cancelled flights and closed borders saw the number of foreign
visitors to the Czech Republic drop by nearly a third in the first quarter
and the outlooks for the rest of the year are bleak. In fact, Barbora
Hruba, from Prague City Tourism says there is scant hope of a revival
    anytime soon.
