  • Kladruby Abbey: a Czech architectural gem’s long and winding road to European (if not world) heritage site status
The eastern Bohemian town of Kladruby nad Labem is famous worldwide for its
    horse stud farm,
founded by the Habsburg emperor Rudolf II. The western Bohemian town of
Kladruby is home to a spectacular
12th century Benedictine monastery where the martyred saint of Bohemia,
John of Nepomuk, was tried and tortured. An effort is now afoot to have the
cloister and Czech Baroque/Gothic style church named a European Heritage
    site.

  • Art education in Czechia: envy of the world
The Czech Republic has a unique system of education in art. Tens of

One of the most frequent woes of foreign tourists in the Czech Republic is

Exchange Act. So how much has the situation actually improved since the new
regulations protecting clients went into force? A question for journalist
Janek Rubeš who exposes Prague scams in his Honest Guide videos.

Karel Čapek was a leading Czech interwar novelist, playwright and
journalist and is perhaps most remembered for works of science fiction such
as The War with the Newts and R.U.R., which gave the world the word
“robot”. But did you know that Čapek was also a travel writer? His
pieces from around Europe are the focus of the book In Search of a Shared
Expression by Mirna Solic, a lecturer at the School of Modern Languages and
Cultures at the University of Glasgow. I spoke to her on the phone from
    Scotland.

  • The Defectors: Czech-American essayist René Georg Vasicek’s debut novel an exploration of identities, truths and “quantum beings”
Essayist, educator and debut novelist René Georg Vasicek was conceived in
communist-era Czechoslovakia, born in Austria a year after the Soviet-led
invasion of his parents’ homeland, and raised in the pine barrens of
eastern Long Island, New York. His novel The Defectors is a self-described
book of odd and uncanny episodes about people, many of them Czechs, trying
not just to escape reality but “defect” from it.

  • Climate experts: white winters in Czechia to become increasingly rare
Ski resorts around the Czech Republic are witnessing one of the worst snow
seasons on record, and according to long-term predictions by Czech climate
experts, we can expect even less snow in the future. While the skiing
season in the country’s mountains will be considerably shorter, white
winters in the low-lying parts of the Czech Republic will soon become a
    distant memory.
