  • Russian crypto-ransomware virus behind attack on Benešov hospital
Almost every fifth Czech company faced a cyberattack last year, a rise of
20 percent year on year, according to data released by the Czech Statistics
Office. The most common form of cyberattack was the so-called
“distributed denial-of-service”, triggering a collapse of normal
traffic by overwhelming the server. However hackers also often deployed
extortion programs known as “ransomware” that make data or even an
entire system inaccessible until the attacker is paid off.

  • Screenshot: a hybrid English-friendly Prague art-house cinema where screenings are events
Screenshot, a new Prague art-house cinema and exhibition gallery, is the
beloved brainchild of Iranian-born filmmaker and FAMU International grad
Payam Razi, who stepped down as Radio Free Europe music editor to devote
his energy to the “hybrid space”. All screenings, he says,
are English-friendly “events” for film lovers eager for a
festival-like, shared viewing experience. Screenshot is working with
venerable Czech institutions such as the National Film Archive and
Institute of Documentary film (KineDok) and the ongoing popular Írán:ci
Film Festival. I began by asking Payam Razi, the son of a cinematographer,
about his personal journey to Prague.

As bushfires continue to ravage large swathes of Australia, people across
the world are donating money to help in the relief efforts. This is also
the case in the Czech Republic, where millions of crowns have been raised

  • Academic Martin Hříbek: Czechia needs to build on traditional brands in India
Czech Foreign Minister Tomáš Petříček completes his three-day official
visit to India on Wednesday, during which he and his delegation primarily
sought to strengthen mutual ties, especially in business. Martin Hříbek
from Charles University’s Institute of South and Central Asia points out
that while bilateral ties go a long way back, in many areas relations had
to be rebuilt from scratch after 1989.

  • FAMU student’s animated short secures Oscar nomination
Dcera (Daughter), the puppet stop-motion movie created by FAMU student
Daria Kashcheeva has been nominated for an Oscar in the category “best
animated short“. It would be the latest and most significant in a series
of awards that the 15- minute production has assembled over the past year.
Meanwhile, The Painted Bird, written and directed by Václav Marhoul has
missed out on the nomination for “Best International Film“.

  • “Invasions are just part of the global biodiversity problem,” says leading botanist Petr Pyšek
Raccoon dog, crayfish plague or the giant hogweed - these are just some of
the hundreds of invasive animal and plant species that have been
intensively spreading in the Czech Republic and elsewhere in Europe over
the past years, causing substantial damages to local ecosystems. Seeking to
address the problem, the Czech cabinet has just approved a draft bill aimed
at regulating the number of invasive species in the Czech Republic. Similar
legislation is in effect in other EU member states.

  • 2020: the year of Czech lace?
The region of Eastern Bohemia has for centuries been celebrated for its
fine textiles and traditional lacework. Last week, the Ministry of Culture
added a specific type of Czech lace to the intangible cultural heritage
list, a step towards such recognition by UNESCO. Meanwhile, an exquisite
example of lacework – a lady’s cape comprised of 21 metres of lace –
has just been restored ahead of the 750th anniversary of the town in which
    it was discovered.

  • Jana Ciglerová: Americans say their lives are fantastic, Czechs say everything is terrible – neither is true
Czech journalist Jana Ciglerová recently published the book Americký
Deník (American Diary), compiling a series of columns she wrote during a
stay in Florida between late 2016 and last summer. When she came to our
studios, the conversation took in US and Czech attitudes to parenting,
education and friendship, as well as Ciglerová’s experience of reporting
from Trump’s America. But I first asked her what had been the hardest
single thing to get used to in the US.
