  • Sociologist on “DIY”: people like to do something creative
Czechs like to describe themselves as a nation of people who are innovative
and manually skilled. There is even a saying in Czech – zlaté české
ručičky, which translates as golden Czech hands, and points to the
nation’s ability to create and innovate under all conditions. Kutilství,
as we describe the DIY phenomenon in Czech, has always been a strong part
    of the Czech national identity.

  • Prague City Hall moves to curb visual pollution
Prague City Hall is pushing ahead in its efforts to fight visual pollution
in the Czech capital. After banning giant bubble blowers and ‘street
artists’ wearing animal costumes from the city centre, Prague councillors
have now focused on excessive commercial advertising and shop window
design, which harm the visual image of the historic centre.

  • Expert: China “very disappointed” following Zeman U-turn in support
Previously a strong advocate of cultivating ties with Beijing, the Czech
president has signalled a major U-turn. Miloš Zeman now says he will not
attend an annual China-organised summit in April, citing disappointment
with the level of Chinese investment in the Czech Republic. I discussed
this shift and its implications with Jeremy Garlick, a China expert at
    Prague’s University of Economics.

  • Jan Sokol – Part 1: It would be an exaggeration to say the StB killed Jan Patočka
Philosopher Jan Sokol was an MP in the early 1990s, served as Czech
education minister and lost in the final round of voting for president in
2003. Barred from studying under the Communists, Professor Sokol came to
philosophy via his father-in-law Jan Patočka, an early signatory of
Charter 77. In the first part of a two-part interview, he discusses
Patočka’s death, the achievements of Charter 77 – which he also signed
    – and the Velvet Revolution. But our conversation began with Jan
Sokol’s family background and his own beginnings.

  • Czechs and the American Civil Rights Movement
Czech interest in African American culture goes back to the 19th century.
When Antonín Dvořák spent three years in the United States in the 1890s
he explored African American and Native American musical traditions, seeing
parallels with the Czech experience of living under Austrian domination. In
the Czechoslovakia of the 1920s and 30s, interest in American jazz spread
rapidly and Native American culture was romanticised in the so-called
“tramping” movement. After the war communist Czechoslovakia was quick
to point to discrimination and segregation in the United States and
encouraged civil rights activists to visit the country. The voices of some
of these visitors are preserved in the Czech Radio archives. And two
decades after the fall of communism the first African American US President
visited Prague. This long and fascinating connection is the subject of the
ninth programme in our series looking at aspects of Czech and Czechoslovak
    history through the sound archives.

  • Election of new Czech ombudsman mired in controversy
The search for the Czech Republic’s next ombudsman continues to be marred
by controversy. After withdrawing his first nomination, the president
announced a new candidate for the post, former deputy ombudsman Stanislav
Křeček. However, while in that position the octogenarian had serious
disagreements with the current public defender of citizens’ rights.

  • Czech and international experts looking to surrogacy to save virtually extinct northern white rhino
Officials from Dvůr Králové zoo and other international organisations
have announced fresh progress in efforts to save the northern white rhino,
of which only two remain alive. They have now created a third embryo that
would be carried by another subspecies and the next step will be to
identify suitable surrogates. I spoke to Dvůr Králové’s Jan Stejskal,
who is coordinating efforts to preserve the northern white rhino.
