Extraordinary scenes on Bermuda's Great Sound.

Team New Zealand's crew is safe after a spectacular crash in the America's Cup challenger semi-finals, flipping the boat on its side and tossing some of the crew into the water.

They're now heading back to their base to assess the damage, with two races scheduled against BAR tomorrow.

Commentator Peter Lester said all the boats suffered damage and questions whether they should have raced in winds in excess of 21 knots.

"I think the race management group here [in Bermuda] need to really be put under the scrutiny. I don't believe the boats should have been out in that condition. It is not seaman-like to sail the boats in these conditions, in my mind."

Lester said the upper limit is 24 knots but there's no provision to stop a race if it gets higher.

"Once the race had started, it's game on basically, but for my mind given the damage, Emirates Team New Zealand's most extensive but all the boats suffered damage and none the less the danger to the crew."

The forecast for tomorrow is for 30 knot winds, which would make conditions un-raceable and therefore giving Team New Zealand time to repair the damage.

Team New Zealand leads 3-1, with the first to five advancing to the final.

Team Japan leads Artemis 3-1 after winning both races today.

Hesson is refusing to commit on Martin Guptill and Tom Latham as the opening pairing for the Champions' Trophy.

Latham notched three scores above 50 in the just completed tri-series, while Guptill was on IPL duty.

Luke Ronchi partnered with Latham against Bangladesh and Ireland failed to pass forty, but Hesson says he's still a chance.

"We want to play a positive brand of cricket especially if Luke and Tom have been able to do that in this series and certainly got us off to a very good start. We're looking forward to adding Martin to the mix but the openers set by Tom and Luke have done an excellent job."

New Zealand has matches against India and Sri Lanka next week ahead of their Champions Trophy opener against Australia next Friday.
