We’re thrilled to welcome Maureen McDole back to the Arts Alive! podcast. The St. Petersburg native, founder of Keep St. Pete Lit and the originator and instigator of numerous local literary pursuits, relocated to Minneapolis in the spring of 2025.  She’s in town for a quick visit, and gave a talk at the University of South Florida. McDole is getting ready to publish her fourth book of poetry. Mending the Nets is the title – a reference to her extended family, whose patriarch was ex-carny, fisherman and entrepreneur Wilson Hubbard. And that’s a story in itself. We also talk about the ongoing mission of the very much still-active Keep St. Pete Lit, her work with the environmental group GIS Jane, the arts and literary scene in St. Petersburg and the realities of residing in a city (which she loves) whose downtown was recently all but occupied by ICE.

 When host Nanette Wiser asked musician Roger Bartlett (the Original Coral Reefer who played as a duo with Jimmy and co-wrote songs) about when were they going to make a film about the first Coral Reefers and Jimmy Buffett's early beginnings two years ago, we laughed. Roger was back in studio to share the big news that he wrote the original soundtrack for the documentary "Occupational Hazards-The First Coral Reefers" and invited director John H. Cunningham to join us by phone at our studio! The film premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in February and is on the festival circuit; we will add new showings to this article as we hear about them. You can catch Roger locally at Paradise Grille in St. Pete Beach March 27 and at Jimmy Buffett Day at Southern Mississippi University March 21 (Jimmy's alma mater) and other national gigs.

Occupational Hazard: The First Coral Reefers, a feature documentary that traces the origins and evolution of Jimmy Buffett’s original Coral Reefer Band during the 1970s and early 1980s. Narrated by Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges, the documentary features commentary from Kenny Chesney, Mac McAnally, songwriter Keith Sykes as well as many original Coral Reefer band members and touring crew. The First Coral Reefers were a group of wildly talented, often unruly characters whose creative energy and personal chemistry helped define Buffett’s most iconic early work. Occupational Hazard is directed by John H. Cunningham, who has a deep and close connection to several members of the first Coral Reefers as well as to a lifelong affinity to Jimmy Buffett, as their paths crossed many times, beginning in the Florida Keys in the 1970s. From dusty road gigs and dive-bar rehearsals to the first big studio albums, the documentary details how this group crafted a sound and built a touring family—until the hard-partying lifestyle, dubbed the “heavy artillery years,” began to take its toll. Drug use led to burnout, and tragedy crept in, but Buffett’s desire to succeed resulted in a near-total transformation of the band on his road to becoming one of the most successful musicians of our generation.

Mayor Kenneth T. Welch and the City of St. Petersburg held a flag-raising ceremony to kick off the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Thursday, in front of City Hall 

Mayor Welch was joined by St. Petersburg City Council Chair Lisset Hanewicz, INDYCAR President Doug Boles, and race co-owners Kim Green and Kevin Savoree. The flag raising featured appearances by last year's Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg winner, Alex Palou, local INDY NXT by Firestone driver Nikita Johnson, and local INDY NXT by Firestone driver Ryan Leach.

Now in its 22nd year, the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Feb. 27 - Mar. 1, 2026. The race is a 1.8-mile, 14-turn waterfront circuit that includes a combination of adjacent downtown streets circling Pioneer Park, the Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater, and The Dali Museum, and extending onto the runways at Albert Whitted Airport, which overlook Tampa Bay and picturesque St. Petersburg Harbor and Marina.
