This week we bring you some good news from Western Australia where the Environmental Protection Agency's decided not to approve Cameco's proposal to mine uranium at Yeelirrie due to threats to subterranean fauna.  Mia Pepper, nuclear-free campaigner with the Conservation Council of Western Australia (ccwa.org.au) and Koara elder Richard Evans, co-founder of the Western Australian Nuclear Free Alliance (nuclearfree.wordpress.com) speak to us about over 40 years of struggle, the win and what is needed now.

Is the international community poised to outlaw the most destructive weapons ever created? In this episode, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons reports on the progress made at the May session of a special UN working group on nuclear disarmament in Geneva. There the vast majority of nations declared a readiness to start work on a treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons. Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia and the Philippines were among those proposing that the first negotiating conference be convened 2017. While few expect that the nine nuclear-armed nations will embrace this new law, proponents are convinced that it will be a powerful catalyst for change.

Another big protest festival at the world’s biggest uranium mine, Olympic Dam, located on Kokatha Country in South Australia has recently taken place. Tune into hear the words of Uncle Kevin Buzzacott, Arabunna elder, speaking to police while blockading the main road into the Olympic Dam mine on the final day of the protest. Plus wise words and sounds from protesters who’ve been involved for decades or just joined the fight.
