Presenting the raga Hindolam.
arohana: S G₂ M₁ D₁ N₂ Ṡ
It is a pentatonic scale (5 notes - audava audava), and is pleasing, gentle and soulful to listen to.
The Hindustani equivalent of Hindolam is Malkauns, derived from the Bhairavi Thaat.
In carnatic music, there are beautiful compositions like samaja vara gamana (Tyagaraja), Maamavathu shree (mysore vasudevachaar), manasuloni marmamulu etc.
Odakkuzhal vili, the very popular akashavani lalitha ganam is in hindolam.
Film composers (especially in malayalam films) have used this raga extensively. Songs like rajahamsame, chandana manivaathil, markazhi poove, indra neelimayolum, ven chandra lekhayorapsara stree are just a few examples.
Let's explore Sindhu Bhairavi - a raga that can depict the varied moods of viraha, shoka, sringara or bhakthi rasa with ease.
In concerts, it's regularly sung towards the end - mostly as a light composition, bhajan or sloka.
Here's a medley in Sindhu Bhairavi combining 5 popular songs.
