Lindy Swain is one of four owners of the beloved Long Beach institution Dylan's Cottage Bakery. She and her husband Mark teamed up with Jeff and Casey Harrell to buy the bakery last year when the former owners decided to close in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. They made a few changes and updates to the business, and the results have been phenomenal! It became Dylan's Cottage Bakery in honor of Dylan Jude Harrell, Lindy's niece, who passed away in 2020 from a rare brain cancer called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). Lindy recounts the sometimes painful memories of her first few years living on the Long Beach peninsula, and speaks on the importance of strong community and family bonds. We talk about potty training, mushrooms, the afterlife, and how much we love Costco, and much more! Lindy was a pleasure to have in the studio and I really admire her courage for talking about something so sensitive and personal.

Matt Lessnau is the man behind Adrift Distillers' beloved line of small-batch spirits. On this episode of Ramble by the River, he drops some serious booze knowledge and we get a peak behind the curtain at the hottest artisanal spirits producer on the coastal scene. Matt walks Jeff through a sampler tasting of a few of this year's popular spirits, and we find out why it is crucial to let gin sit awhile, like a fine beef stew.

It seemed like Cooper Belisle had everything going for him. A glance at his Facebook might arouse envy in the viewer as the pages are littered with colorful pictures of blue skies and the many wonders of the world. His commercial diving career allowed him to explore amazing places all over the planet, covering every State and countless countries across the globe. Whether he was underwater in the States, or across the pond, drinking beer with fellow travelers at a hostel, Cooper was living for the day and everything looked picture-perfect.

But all of that came to a crashing halt when, at age 26, to the befuddlement of his doctors, he was diagnosed with Cancer. When he left the doctor's office that day to return to his empty hotel room, where he couldn't even masturbate (sore from cancer), he knew 3 things for sure: he had advanced-stage testicular cancer, it was likely that it had already spread to his lymph nodes and/or lungs, and it was time to make a few changes...

In this episode, Cooper tells his story with honesty, humor, conviction, and profound insight into the human condition. We get into some juicy territory as he discusses his cancer diagnosis, relationships, childhood hardships, and substance abuse, but the conversation maintains a positive and fun vibe. It is obvious that Cooper tries to see life for what it is; accept the bad with the good, and focus on positive growth. He has managed to cultivate an attitude of appreciation and revelry for life, despite being faced with an onslaught of challenges that would break most people. This kid is a gem. Blake Kukula is a 3-time Washington State Champion in Boy's golf, is currently an NCAA Division one athlete for the Seattle University, and has his sights set on the PGA Tour. In addition to his golf credentials, he is a musician, a deep thinker, a hard-worker, and a really nice guy. In fact, he is so nice that he couldn't say no when I asked if he wanted to receive some mild electrical shocks during our conversation. Don't miss this one!
