Ransom Note

There are very few musical projects which last a lifetime. Since the early 1980's Woo have been producing eclectic ambient, electronic music with a new age twist and have released seven albums across decades. The latest of these releases was in the form of "Awaawaa" which was released on Palto Flats in 2016. Brothers Mark and Clive Ives might not have ever expected to have been involved in a project with such longevity, from humble beginnings producing music for their own amusement they have since gone on to inspire and delight across a generation of listeners.

We are delighted to be able to welcome the pair as they contribute to our Monday mix series with an array of elegant chilled out music.

Bienvenidos and willkommen to the fourth instalment of the themed @zoonvansnook presents: OddCasts (#4) for the esteemed Ransom Note magazine.

This time out, the theme is all things bird-related, to coincide with last month's National Bird Day.

Contained inside, you will find a carefully laid nest of styles including (but not limited to):

Welsh freak-pop, neo-kraut rock, laid-back rockabilly, instrumental grime, acoustic melancholia, sideways electronica, Balkan-inspired folk, lo-fi a cappella, electro-baggy, psycho-surf, Japanese folk pop, 80s sci-fi VHS chic, and Matmos!!!... all interspersed with snippets of poetry, essays, news samples and field recordings.

For this mix, I am elated to have rekindled my collaboration with US artist Seth Fitts, who did all of the sleeve artwork for my debut LP '(Falling from) The Nutty Tree' (Mush Records).

From London to Sydney, Jamie Blanco is not your stereotypical Brit abroad. The producer and disc jockey relocated across the globe with a vision of a new life beneath the sun, bringing with him a bag full of music and a dream.

As one half of Ess O Ess and a producer in his own right he has released music across a wide variety of record labels which includes the likes of Futureboogie, Love On The Rocks, London Housing Trust and Not An Animal. His sound draws upon the outskirts of eclecticism and sees him blend balearic infusions alongside heavy hitting dance cuts. We asked Jamie to take a detour away from what me might stereotypically play in the club as he steps up to deliver a mix packed full with ambient goodness, dreamy pads and music perfect for soothing the pain of a Monday morning.

A dreamy hour of bliss, perfect for the beach or the office, no matter where you might find yourself this February.

Live instrumentation and dance music are often disassociated, perhaps this is because we have become accustomed to the sight of laptops, buttons and machinery. However, that is not to say that there aren't people producing electronic music with instruments in this day and age, no, far from it in fact.

Ishmael is a producer most commonly known for his take on house music having released on labels such as Wolf Music, Church and Deso. However, most recently he has taken a sidestep away from the typical narrative of a dance music producer, hooking up with instrumentalists to create what he has titled the Ishmael Ensemble. "Songs For Knotty" is the first release to emerge from the project and has just been released on Banoffee Pies Records. The project sees more of a focus towards jazz and abstract electronics than club built sounds, a twist in a musical career which shows great promise. Ahead of his appearance at Farmfestival alongside the Ensemble we caught up with him for a chat as he contributes to our mix series...

Isle Of Jura issued a statement of intent when they announced their debut release in the early months of last year. Their first release came in the form of a reissue of a highly sought after disco record from the 1980's, Escape From New York's "Fire In My Heart". An out of reach record was made attainable once again and the demand rocketed.

The label then went on to re-release a balearic masterclass in the form of Chayell's "It's Never Too Hot".

What lies ahead for the label in 2017 is a mystery, but expect the unexpected. We spoke to the label founder Kevin Griffiths as he delivers a flavour of the label.
