  • Civic Media Spotlight for March 22nd & 23rd (Hour 1)

First this weekend, we check out a conversation between the Maggie Daun Show and Dr. Melinda Brennan, Executive Director of the Wisconsin ACLU. Dr. Brennan joins Maggie to discuss how the current immigration practices will affect Wisconsin's economy and why all of us should care how immigrants are cared for.

Then, on UpNorthNews Radio, Pat Kreitlow answers a listener’s question about the difference between billionaire Elon Musk backing Brad Schimel in the state Supreme Court race and billionaire George Soros backing Susan Crawford. The answer gets to the heart of whether any one super-rich business owner should be able to try to purchase justices to sway cases toward their own businesses and profits.

After that, on Matenaer On Air, the show speaks with Dave Wilde who suffers from MS, as well as Autism and he shares his story of receiving Medicare and Medicaid benefits and the shameful way he, along with others, were treated to get those benefits. He also speaks on how difficult some states make it to receive benefits and sometimes in embarrassing and borderline dehumanizing fashions.

Last for this hour, Trygve Olson of The Lincoln Project joins the Todd Allbaugh Show to discuss the effects that Trump's tariffs will have on Wisconsinites. A mind-boggling 10% of Wisconsin jobs will be directly impacted, and 77% of those folks voted for Trump. What do they get? A big middle finger.

  • Xochtil Torres Small & Daniel Olson

On this week’s program, Mark Becker talks with Xochtil Torres Small, former Deputy Secretary of Agriculture under President Biden, and Daniel Olson, a Wisconsin dairy farmer. The conversation digs into how changes from the Trump administration affect our state’s farming community. Xochitl speaks about what is going on from the government side of the industry, and Daniel is able to bring what’s happening to a hyper-local level. The discussion also hits on the Trump administration’s use of tariffs and how it’s already begun to hurt our family farms. Mark ends the show by giving his thoughts on Tony Wied from Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District.

  • Civic Media Spotlight for the Weekend of March 8th & 9th (Hour 2)

We cover a lot of politics on Civic Media, but we all need a break from the daily grind and some folks find that in a book club. Author Laura Bird is back on UpNorthNews Radio and instead of recommending books, she’s telling us all about how to find a good book club or how to create one that’s just right for you and your friends.

The, Maino & the Mayor is joined by Will Kocken from H.O.O.A.H, WI, to discuss what you can do this week: Invest in Veterans Week. He suggests reaching out one-on-one to have a conversation and donating to local veterans service organizations. Will also says that Northeast Wisconsin is very supportive of veterans and veteran service organizations.

After that on Matenaer On Air, Jane, Greg and Calvin are joined by host of Amicus: A Law Review, Jim Santelle for the start of a weekly segment where we will take a deep dive into the news coming out of the courts around the country, and possibly the world. This week we're talking about the decision from SCOTUS on whether or not President Trump can withhold payments from foreign aid groups and how one ally voted against the president. Jim also draws comparison between Trump and leaders of bygone days when they declare "I am the law".

The hour closes out with The John and Gordy Show welcoming back Mike McCabe to talk about claiming white as the symbolic color of those unhappy with either party.

  • Civic Media Spotlight for the Weekend of March 8th & 9th (Hour 1)

To begin the hour, Trygve Olson of The Lincoln Project shares some new research from the Lincoln Democracy Institute with the Todd Allbaugh Show. For the last year, they've been talking with thousands of Americans in swing states, including Wisconsin. These discussions went far beyond the typical poll, asking not just what people think, but WHY they think it. The results can teach us a lot about connecting with our neighbors and having difficult discussions.

Then on the Dom Salvia Show, Dom and Earl Ingram discuss a potential looming recession due to the economic chaos of the second Trump administration. The news is bad but the discussion is great!

Next on the Maggie Daun Show, Maggie is joined by guest co-host Tom Palzewicz. Jeff, a conservative caller from Superior, explains why he believes Trump has the right to change laws. Turns out the Constitution, as Jeff believes, does not give Trump that right.

Finally, Milwaukee Film Critic, Matt Mueller joins the Nite Lite with Pete Schwaba. Matt and Pete talk about Adrien Brody's long acceptance speech at the Oscars, the winners of awards and their thoughts, and what should've been nominated but wasn't.

  • The Impact of Losing USAID

What is the purpose of the USAID?

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is the principal U.S. agency to extend assistance to countries recovering from disaster, trying to escape poverty, and engaging in democratic reforms.

Joining the Revolution this week is Kristina Drye, who was the speechwriter for Samantha Power, Administrator of USAID. Kristina goes into great detail as to why USAID matters, what the program did, and how our national security will be severely impacted by the shuttering of the agency.

She gives insight on what it was like to be in the building while DOGE agents were accessing the systems and working to shut the organization down.

Hopefully the world knows this isn’t exactly what the American people wanted.

    Kristina Drye on Rational Revolution

Mark then gives his prediction for what the end goal is for all of this chaos we are currently seeing, comparing this to “an abusive relationship.”

What we’ve been doing is just destroying those relationships that have taken generations to cultivate. – Mark Becker

  • Civic Media Spotlight for March 1st & 2nd (Hour 2)

To begin this hour, Jill Rosenthal, the Director of Public Health Policy at the Center for American Progress, joins the Maggie Daun Show to discuss what proposed NIH cuts do to the economy and rural hospitals and clinics in Wisconsin.

Next, the Chad Holmes Show speaks with Judge Susan Crawford, a candidate for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, to learn about her judicial philosophy and discuss the aspects of the campaign trail.

Following that, Nite Lite with Pete Schwaba welcomes actor Jamie McShane, who has starred in shows including 1923 and Bosch. Jamie shares his experience on the set of the series 1923, a new series called Task, and working on Hostage with Bruce Willis.

Lastly, the Earl Ingram Show is joined by Dr. Omar for tips for good health habits. They include four main things we should keep in mind 1) sleep, 2) eating, 3) how we live, and 4) our relationships. Earl and Dr. Omar also talk about keeping a good balance of the four.

  • Civic Media Spotlight for March 1st & 2nd (Hour 1)

On Matenaer On Air on Tuesday, Dr. Kristin Lyerly joined the show with Laurel Marcinkus, who went through a horrific experience while carrying a wanted pregnancy. This is a deeply personal discussion with Laurel and we gave it a trigger warning on our show notes, but we felt it was important to know what women are going through when access to abortion isn't available or when the hospital doesn't know when they can give it.

Then, on UpNorthNews Radio, Pat Kreitlow welcomes Joan Esposito of WCPT Radio in Chicago, along with former Chicago Tribune editor Mark Jacob and former US Attorney Jim Santelle, as they do a theater review—political theater, that is, and hand out awards for actors, supporting actors, comedies and dramas from politicians whose performances help their careers while hurting a big chunk of the country.

After that on the Todd Allbaugh Show, the newly-elected State Sen. Sarah Keyeski joins us to talk about her background in rural Wisconsin and the new Right To Repair bill that she co-authored. She believes that our farmers should be allowed to repair their own equipment. Common sense, right?

To close out the hour, the John and Gordy Show welcomes James Santelle to the program to talk about how president Trump is using and disregarding the Supreme Court’s Chevron decision to circumvent the laws of the United States.

  • What is the Path Forward?

Mark is joined by former Lt. Governor of Maryland and former RNC Chairman, Michael Steele. They talk about what has happened since Donald Trump’s inauguration, what the path forward is, and what people can do about it.

People want to come to America despite what goes on here and now we have someone who wants to put that up for sale.

    Michael Steele

Mark talks about how he was texting with Adam Kinsinger on inauguration morning and he asked him how he was doing. Adam replied “It sucks, but I’m still hopeful.” He asks Michael the same question to which Michael replies, “This sucks and I am Concerned.”

Michael also touches on a plan in the works to take the party in a different direction, and he answers the question, “what was his favorite title?”

Mark then muses about how to keep your sanity and find your reason, despite the whirlwind of news that surrounds us every day.

When you find it, you’ll know exactly what you’re fighting for and that’s the key.

  • Civic Media Spotlight for February 22nd & 23rd (Hour 2)

Kicking off this hour, Maggie invites Gray Gunderson of Park Falls to talk about the Birkie on the Maggie Daun Show! They have a lot of great conversations, including a call from Jim in Brookfield about how much the event means and how little known it is here in WI despite drawing international visitors.

Then, Paul Vanden Plas with Wonderfully Wisconsin joins Maino & the Mayor. Paul uses social media platforms to share all the wonderful things Wisconsin has to offer. From local dive bars to state parks that folks may not know, Paul takes us there and shares the places, people, and history that make this state so awesome.

Next, sometimes, when a guest doesn't show up, you get a great conversation with the listeners on Matenaer On Air. In lieu of a Social Security advocate coming on the show to talk about the importance of protecting the nations most important "entitlements", we turned the mic to the audience and for three straight segments, we took call after call and listened to folks on or affected by social security, we read their texts and livestream comments. All of them express how vital that check is to their lives, and survival as well as what will happen if the current administration takes a machete to the money they've paid into, for so many years.

Last but not least, John and Gordy in the Morning welcomes back Mike McCabe to talk about the hardships, but also community from farm life, and how it can be a metaphor for what the country needs right now.

  • Civic Media Spotlight for February 22nd & 23rd (Hour 1)

The hour kicks off when the Earl Ingram Show is joined by Professor Bob Harvey for a history lesson, educating the show on the slave trade, religious freedoms and touches the hearts of callers and texters.

Then, Northeastern Wisconsin based Rock/ Rap musician Matt Harper joins Nite Lite with Pete Schwaba. Pete and Matt talk about the Kendrick Lamar Super Bowl Half Time Show, the Rock/ Rap Combo, and Matt performs songs in-studio.

After that, there was a little bit of Black History Month history made in Wisconsin this week. For seven years, Republicans have obstructed a clean Black History Month resolution from the Legislative Black Caucus. This year, it passed the Assembly on a unanimous voice vote. UpNorthNews asks the caucus chair and vice chair, Sen. Dora Drake and Rep. Sequanna Taylor, about the small victory, the ongoing fights to take real action on areas where communities of color still face broad disparities, and how the next state budget can help or hurt their cause.

Finally, the Dom Salvia Show likes to end each day with something good. Dom, Jess, and any guests must each share something either happy or simply good that we've experienced recently. Thursday, with Jim Santelle, we got a lot of good. From happy news on our text line to good acts we can do and the power of art, this is a great short segment!
