I Have a Dream — Recovery, Responsibility, and Carrying the Message
Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and instead of quoting his “I Have a Dream” speech for inspiration alone, we’re slowing down to look at it through a recovery lens — and asking an honest question: how does that dream line up with AA?
Dr. King’s dream wasn’t passive. It wasn’t just hope, words, or belief. It demanded action, responsibility, sacrifice, and community. In that way, it closely mirrors the heart of Alcoholics Anonymous — a program built on the idea that recovery survives only if the message is carried and made available to anyone who reaches out for help.
Today on The Daily Trudge, we connect Dr. King’s vision to recovery and responsibility. We talk about the AA principle of “I am responsible” and what it means to move beyond personal sobriety toward collective care. Recovery isn’t meant to be protected, hidden, or rationed — it’s meant to be shared.
I’ll also share my dream:
A community where everyone has a real shot at recovery — regardless of money, housing, background, or mistakes — and where carrying the message isn’t optional, but understood as our responsibility to each other.
This isn’t about politics or rewriting history. It’s about recognizing that both AA and Dr. King’s dream point to the same truth: change doesn’t happen through words alone — it happens through action, service, and responsibility to the community.
If recovery has given you something worth protecting, the question becomes:
What are you doing to make sure someone else gets it too?
