Ray's memoirs, Behind the Scenes: From Hollywood to Broadway, not only is a history of theatre and variety television in its heyday, but pays homage to the many teachers who made a difference in Ray's life—both the teachers in his formative years in high school and college, and the many mentors who guided Ray as he learned his craft as a professional. Topics this segment include Ray's early years in television, including working on such variety series as The Dean Martin Show and The Andy Williams Show; the heart and kindness of Beatrice Arthur, including the generous endowment she left the Ali Forney Center in New York City upon her death; and the work ethic that Ray developed while he was a student at the Yale School of Art.
