An elderly lady says, "One benefit of living so long is
sharing what I've learned. So make my day by
letting me share three secrets that can make your
life better." Then she offers us some great counsel:
(1) "Time is precious; don't waste it. After my
husband died, I was staying with friends. One
evening they started arguing and eventually
stopped speaking to one another. Now, I know
arguments happen; my husband and I had several
doozies. But at that moment. I understood as never
before that the time we have together is precious.
Don't waste it bickering about things that won't
matter when your loved one is gone. Do everything
you can to live in harmony and show your love.
Why? Because no matter how long you have
together, it's never enough. (2) You're making
memories; make them good ones. Looking back, I
thank God for so many unforgettable moments. The
day my husband died we kissed (as we always did
when we parted), at noon. By five-thirty that
evening, he was dead. I've always been glad about
that final kiss. So create memories-not regrets! (3)
It's not what happens, but how you respond that
counts. Every day holds new challenges that will
test your love and resolve. You have the power
through Christ to make each test an occasion for
growth. Life is full of seemingly unpleasant events.
Try to handle them in such a way that when you're
old, you will be able to look back and say, 'I thank
you, God, for that experience; it helped me grow."
And that's how to live wisely and well!

Jesus said: "I've told you all this so that trusting me,
you will be unshakable and assured, deeply at
peace. In this…world you will continue to experience
difficulties. But take heart! I've conquered the
world" (n 16:33 MSG). Life keeps handing us
problems that test our faith. How do you know how
much weight a bridge can handle? By testing it.
Daniel's success made him a target. Knowing he
prayed regularly, his enemies persuaded King
Darius that all prayers should be made to him as the
king. Yet Daniel kept praying each day-in front of
an open window, no less. When the king heard
about it, he threw Daniel into a lions' den. But God
turned the tables. Next morning Daniel came out,
his enemies went in, and the king announced,
"Daniel's God……is the living God" (Da 6:26 MSG),
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to
worship the king's idols. Even when they were
warned to bow or burn, they said, "God..is able to
deliver us...But if not…we will not serve thy gods"
Da 3:17-18). And because they walked by faith,
God delivered and promoted them. Facing Goliath,
David refused to wear the king's armor. He said, "I
cannot go with these; for I have not proved them"
(1Sa 17:39). So what did he go with? "The name of
the Lord" (1Sa 17:45), and the rest is history. Now,
chances are you will never find ourself in lions'
den, a fiery furnace, or facing a giant, although
some days it will feel like it. But when you're under
attack, (1) pray and claim God's power, (2) walk by
faith, and (3) go "in the name of the Lord."

It's said that the Titanic sank because of cheap
rivets and poor planning. Faced with a shortage of
quality bolts, the shipbuilders used substandard
ones that popped when the ship hit the iceberg. So,
how sturdy are the bolts of your faith? Reinforce
them daily with God's Word, seasons of in-depth
prayer, and fortifying fellowship. Describing signs of
the end times, Jesus said, "All these are the
beginning of birth pains" (Mt 24:8 NIV), and birth
pains signal the onset of the final push. The
obstetrician says, "This will hurt for a while, but it's
going to get better" and Jesus offers us the same
assurance about end-time events. We're in the final
hours-just a few pushes away from delivery. John
said: "I saw 'a new heaven and…earth, ..the first
heaven and……earth had passed away, and……the new
Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven...prepared
as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I
heard a loud voice from the throne saying...'God's
dwelling place is now among the people, and he will
dwell with them. They will be his people, and God
himself will be…their God. He will wipe every tear
from their eyes. There will be no more death or
mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of
things has passed away.' He who was seated on the
throne said, 'I am making everything new!'" (Rev
21:1-5 NIV). People everywhere are searching for
answers. So don't isolate, engage! Your goal isn't to
get out of this world in one piece: it's to take as
many people as you can to heaven along with you.

"Anyone who does not love remains in death." 1Jn
3:14 NIV
There is a direct link between your health and your
relationships. When you're disconnected and isolated
from others, you're two to five times more likely to die
than people with close ties! Even people with bad
habits like smoking, overeating, and physical inactivity
-but who remain socially connected-live longer than
people with great health habits but who are isolated.
We see the physical, life-giving power of connection in
the life of Winston Churchill. He had a wonderful
marriage, was deeply connected to his family, his
friends, his nation, and his work. But his health habits
were terrible. His diet was awful, and he constantly
smoked cigars. He drank too much, had weird sleep
habits, and was completely sedentary-yet he lived to
ninetv ears old. That reminds me of the newspaper
reporter questioning an old man about his longevity: "I
suppose it's because you take systematic exercise.
The man quipped, "The only exercise I take is acting
as a pallbearer to my friends who have indulged in
strenuous exercise!" (Note: We're not condoning bad
habits!) God said, "It is not good...to be alone" (Ge
2:18 NIV), because when you're alone, you're more
likely to succumb to temptation and discouragement,
become self-absorbed, and spend money in selfish
ways. Not only do you suffer, the people God put in
your life get cheated out of the love He intended vou
to share with them. You say, "But I've been hurt by
people." We all have. But just as the answer to a
snakebite is snake venom, the answer to bad
relationships is good relationships. And God has some
in store for you-so talk to Him about it today.

"How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter
than honey to my mouth!" Ps 119:103 NIV
The fact that we now enjoy the vegetables we hated
as children indicates that as we mature, we can
cultivate a taste for healthy, life-giving food. And since
the Bible is soul food, you can cultivate a taste for that
too. Eugene Peterson writes: "Christians feed on
Scripture. Holy Scripture nurtures the holy community
as food nurtures the human body. Christians don't
simply learn or study or use Scripture: we assimilate it,
take it into our lives in…a way that it gets metabolized
into acts of love." Consumer research indicates the
average Bible owner has nine Bibles and is looking for
more. What's wrong with this picture? The
unexpressed secret is that many people find the Bible
boring. This is quite a recent problem-and a serious
one. Ancient Greek, the language of the New
Testament, has no word for boredom. The word didn't
acquire its current meaning in English until the last few
centuries. When we consider the ancient world-no
television, internet, movies, and virtually no books-
we're inclined to think how boring it must have been.
But the ancients weren't bored. We're the generation
that gets bored, because capacity to focus our
attention and delight our minds in prolonged thought
has been diminished b dependency on external
stimuli. We have too many tempting alternatives.
That's why becoming a faithful Bible reader begins as
a discipline, continues as a dutv, and finallv becomes
a delight. "How sweet are your words…sweeter than
honey to my mouth!" And that can be your experience,
too, when it comes to reading God's Word. You just
need to get serious about it.
