  • Estonia: The Survivors Who Still Had to Be Found

Read the full story: Estonia: escape and rescue in the Baltic Sea

Anders Eriksson escaped the Estonia, then waited beneath an overturned life raft. Sara Hedrenius and Kent Härstedt were strangers who chose to work together as the ferry rolled over. This episode follows their documented experiences through escape and rescue.

On September 28, 1994, the Estonia sank on her crossing from Tallinn to Stockholm. Of 989 people aboard, 137 survived and 852 died. Survivor recollections are presented alongside the original investigation and the December 2025 final preliminary assessment, which reaffirmed bow-structure failure and flooding while describing wider structural and oversight failures.

  • Bear Brook: The Girl Whose Father They Knew

Investigators knew who her father was. They still did not know her name.

Two discoveries near Bear Brook State Park in New Hampshire led to an investigation spanning decades. A surviving child’s search for her origins, relatives looking for a missing family, and a birth record in California eventually helped restore four victims’ identities.

This episode follows the search for Marlyse Honeychurch, her daughters Marie Vaughn and Sarah McWaters, and the child identified in September 2025 as Rea Rasmussen. It also explains why her mother, Pepper Reed, remains missing.

Authorities hold Terry Peder Rasmussen responsible for the Bear Brook killings. He died in 2010 while imprisoned for a separate California murder and was never tried for Bear Brook. Pepper’s suspected death is not a confirmed or adjudicated homicide.

  • Hiromitsu Shinkawa: Alive but Unseen After the Tsunami

Hiromitsu Shinkawa survived Japan’s 2011 tsunami on a piece of his own roof. Ships and helicopters passed without noticing him. Nearly two days later, a naval lookout saw a man waving among the debris.

This episode follows the documented return home, the ordeal offshore and the rescue, while preserving the limits of contemporary accounts. They reported that his wife was swept away; they do not establish her eventual fate.

  • Mauro Prosperi: Lost in the Sahara

Read the full Mauro Prosperi story at Read The Real Story

A helicopter passed close enough for Mauro Prosperi to see the pilot’s helmet, he later recalled. His distress flare did not bring rescue. After a sandstorm separated him from the 1994 Marathon des Sables, water checkpoints, search aircraft and a desert shrine took on a different meaning. Follow the failed signals, his family’s search and the local people who helped him reach care in Algeria.

The disappearance and rescue were reported at the time. Much of the solitary ordeal comes from Prosperi’s later accounts. The episode distinguishes those recollections from contemporary reporting, the race founder’s 1998 challenge and the organiser’s current history.

    • Tunguska: The Forest That Pointed to the Sky

Read the full story on Read The Real Story

A man at a Siberian trading post later described a blast that threw him to the ground. He was roughly forty miles from its center.

Years later, Leonid Kulik followed the fallen forest toward the meteorite he expected to find. The closer his expeditions looked, the more the ground challenged that expectation.

Follow the witness accounts, the search through the forest, and the evidence behind Tunguska’s leading scientific explanation. An atmospheric airburst is the accepted broad explanation, and most scientists favor an asteroid. The object’s precise characteristics remain uncertain; a missing specimen does not make every explanation equally likely.

The Tunguska event happened on the morning of June 30, 1908. Witness accounts were recorded retrospectively. The episode distinguishes the 1927 expedition’s observations from later searches and modern scientific reconstruction.

Read the full Craig Coley story on Read The Real Story.

Investigators tested a witness’s observation and searched for evidence thought to have been lost. A broader reinvestigation led to Coley’s 2017 innocence pardon and a judicial finding of actual innocence. The new evidence did not identify a killer. Rhonda Wicht’s sister continues to disagree with the exoneration; official findings remain unchanged. No other person had been convicted of the murders as of October 24, 2026.

On May 10, 2013, rescuers clearing the ruins of Rana Plaza in Bangladesh found someone alive. Reshma Begum said she had heard crews for days without being heard herself. A moving stick finally offered a way to reach them.

This is the story of the rescue, the account she gave afterward, and the life she began rebuilding. Her filmed rescue is distinct from the preceding seventeen days, which rest on testimony and later became the subject of disputed allegations. We preserve that uncertainty without presenting an unproven claim as fact.

Sources include contemporaneous reporting and rescue interviews from The Daily Star and Reuters, later reporting by bdnews24 on the disputed allegations, and an AFP interview one year after the collapse.

A cigarette butt remained in evidence while Rita Curran’s family waited decades for an answer. A DNA profile, a family tree and a third-floor apartment would change the investigation.

This episode follows the documented Burlington investigation and the family’s wait. Police identified a deceased man in 2023; their conclusion was not tested at his trial. Sources include the Burlington Police Department’s final report and firsthand reporting from the 2023 announcement.
