  • 230: How Collaborative Advantage Beats Competitive Advantage with Paul Skinner
The history of business strategy, so says my guest today, has been built on the idea that businesses must compete to win.
But what if the competitive model of business is now broken? In today’s interconnected world, could strategies to create competitive advantage actually be holding your business back?

Paul Skinner, a strategic consultant and social entrepreneur, presents an alternative model of collaborative advantage which you can use, he says, to drive a greater level of success that is better for you, better for your customers, and better for society.
Paul unpacks the idea in his brand new book called Collaborative Advantage: How Collaboration Beats Competition as a Strategy for Success.
This book is the indispensable guide that will help you rapidly accelerate the growth of your business or the impact of your non-profit organization by bringing the fuller, value-creating potential of the outside world inside your organization.

  • 228: The Most Important Meeting of Your Life
If you’ve achieved any amount of success in your business, then you may be among those who realize it’s not come without sacrifices. Sacrifices that affect your relationship with your spouse and your children.
As you no doubt realize, it doesn’t have to be that way but, unfortunately, it can often seem to be easier said that done, right?

That’s why I’m excited to have recently met (virtually) Mr. Jim Scheils. He has an incredible vision to impact families all around the world with the message that true, outstanding quality time with the people you care about is indeed possible, even in the midst of the hustle and bustle of demanding work and school schedules.
Jim’s book – originally released three years ago, but relaunching next week in an updated and revised edition – is called The Family Board Meeting: You Have 18 Summers to Create Lasting Connection With Your Children.
I don’t have children of my own, but I still benefited greatly from reading it. That’s because Jim’s concepts and strategies apply to all of your cherished relationships.
Jim asks, “If you could do one thing to dramatically strengthen your family in just a few hours, would you do it?” Of course you would, right?
Then welcome to the most important meeting of your life!

    * Learning to spot the warning signs that your successful business could be hurting your family

  • 227: How to Revolutionize Your Career and Make Big Things Happen
Three years ago this month, I had the privilege of appearing on The Art of Adventure podcast.
The host, Derek Loudermilk interviewed me about reading and podcasting (surprise!). Fast forward a few years and he’s leveraged what he’s learned interviewing fellow adventurers, and has turned that knowledge into a new book.

Derek has lead a pretty exciting life. He is a professional adventurer, polymath, bestselling author, publisher, speaker, digital nomad, business coach, father, Lord of Sealand, and host of The Art of Adventure Podcast.
He’s also a former scientist and has a degree in biology. They don’t come any more well-rounded than this guy.
Derek’s book is called Superconductors: Revolutionize Your Career and Make Big Things Happen. In it, he says the steady career path is a thing of the past: disruption is here to stay.
He continues that you need to be able to keep learning, growing and reinventing yourself to stay valuable in the midst of this change. Superconductors shows you how.

    * What to do when complacency follows success
    * Derek’s belief that charisma is a learned skill and why it’s important you practice it

  • 226: Rules for Remarkable Remote Leadership
If you work in a traditional office setting but have coworkers who work remotely, you’re probably a bit jealous from time to time.
They don’t have to commute all the time. They can work in their pajamas. The list goes on and on.

Funny thing is, if you’re the one working remotely with coworkers who work in a traditional office setting, you no doubt worry about the advantages they may have in regard to promotions because they’re being seen more than you are. They can get the bosses “ear” at a moments notice sometimes. Birthdays? No cake and ice cream for you. You’re not there.
“The grass is always greener…” mentality, I suppose.
These remote work issues and more are being addressed in a new book by Kevin Eikenberry and Wayne Turmel. That book is called The Long-Distance Leader: Rules for Remarkable Remote Leadership.
Today, I interview Kevin as we dive into the key insights and main ideas from the book.

    * The unique challenges facing teams working remotely

    * Techniques for building trusting and solid working relationships when team members aren’t all together

    * …and plenty more!
