    If you’re anything like me, you know how important it is to not only set goals, but to actually make a habit of writing them down and tracking your progress. Otherwise, what’s the point, right?
    Yet, despite what we know we should do, more often than not we end up falling off the wagon like a good-intentioned New Years resolution.

  • Episode #010: Dan Schawbel, author of Promote Yourself: The New Rules for Career Success
    At first glance, reading a book titled Promote Yourself might sound a bit narcissistic. After all, social media has allowed many people to get quite good at it. And by good, I mean really, really bad.
    What good, then, could come from being an expert self-promoter? Aren’t they the person everyone avoids at parties, shuns online and generally dislikes?
    Click to Listen

    Ah, but I’m talking about promotion of a different kind. The kind I liken to a quote from comedian Steve Martin in his book Born Standing Up: A Comic’s Life. In it, he writes, “Be so good they can’t ignore you.” Or, as Seth Godin puts it in Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?, “Don’t wait to be picked. Pick yourself.”
    It is in this spirit of picking yourself that we delve into into today’s episode. In our conversation with Dan, we’ll learn about:

    * Dan’s thoughts on today’s job market and what it means particularly for Millennials.
    * Ways in which some of today’s brightest companies are evolving to make their culture more Millennial-friendly
    * The importance of being more than just your job description by developing new hard skills
    * Tips for walking that fine line between gaining visibility and being seen as a promotional jerk
    * The key things managers look for when deciding whom to promote
    * The importance of mutually beneficial mentor/mentee relationships
    * And a lot more!

  • Episode #009: Ken Segall, Author of Insanely Simple: The Obsession That Drives Apple’s Success
    Even if you don’t consider yourself a fan of all things Apple, it’s impossible to deny that the company has improved virtually every category they’ve chosen to enter.
    From products and packaging, to marketing and advertising, the hits seem to far outweigh the misses. But what is it about Apple that has them firing on all cylinders more often that not?
    Click to Listen
    When Ken Segall, author of the book Insanely Simple: The Obsession That Drives Apple’s Success, asked himself that question, he found a common thread in all the data, feedback and meeting notes.

    In a word, it’s all about Simplicity.
    When everyone else wants to include every feature but the kitchen sink, Apple says “Let’s wait on that.” When everyone else wants to offer a plethora of model choices, Apple counters with, “How about just a couple?”
    It’s this “simplicity as religion” that serves as the common thread among all the successes.
    In today’s conversation with Ken, we’ll learn about:

    * How Apple defines Simplicity
    * Why more companies don’t just do what Apple does
    * Why Steve Jobs insisted on keeping meeting groups small
    * The dangers of trying to please everyone
    * How being jettisoned from Apple was the best thing that could ever happen to Steve
    * Why most “nos” should be challenged with a dose good ol’ common sense

    Ken is currently working on his next book. Whereas his current book was about identifying all the elements of Apple’s passion for Simplicity, Ken’s upcoming book will break down how to successfully implement Simplicity within a company’s culture and how to ward off the complexity temptation.

  • Episode #007: Pat Flynn, author of Let Go and the man behind Smart Passive Income

    The first time I heard the name Pat Flynn (just a few months ago) he came up three times in a single week. There was a friend, a blog and a podcast all referencing this guy. I had to find out who he was and why he was so important.

    If there was ever the perfect example of an individual honestly and ethically making his own way on the internet – employment be damned – Pat was it. A more personable, down-to-earth guy you’ll never meet.

    He’s the proverbial exception to the rule. Nice guys finish last? Hardly!
    In Pat’s world, nice guys are right where they should be: at the top of their game and graciously showing the rest of us how it’s done.
    In his new book, Let Go, available exclusively via Kindle and the Snippet App for iOS, Pat shares his story of being let go from his job in architecture in 2008, despite doing everything right. In short, it was the best thing that could have ever happened to him.
    In this episode, Pat shares about:

    * How he took something he was already doing and turned it into an ebook that leveraged the perception of his expertise
    * The impact adding a podcast had on Pat’s online business
    * Determining what it is you bring to the table no one else can?
    * The importance of a dedicated physical space for those working from home
    * Letting go of being on the “right path” and trying to fulfill societal and/or family expectations and, instead, living your own dreams

  • Episode #006: Jonah Berger, New York Times Best-Selling Author of Contagious: Why Things Catch On
    Jonah Berger is a business writer and professor of marketing at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. He is the author of the New York Times best-selling book Contagious: Why Things Catch On, and you and I get to learn from him this week.
    Click to Listen

    In this episode, Jonah lays out the six STEPPS to helping your idea, product or service catch on.

    Follow these key STEPPS to craft contagious content:

    * Social Currency – People care how they look to others. Make them feel like insiders
    * Triggers – Top-of-mind means tip-of-tongue
    * Emotion – When we care, we share
    * Public – The more public something is, the more likely people will imitate it
    * Practical Value – News you can use. Useful things get shared
    * Stories – Stories are vessels, so build a Trojan Horse

    Jonah’s Greatest Leadership Lesson Learned
    Jonah says, “Don’t follow the crowd.” It’s easy to get caught up in the marketing hype and shiny new social media “toys.” It’s important to remember that the tools are nothing more than technology. They are not a strategy.
