  • The Book of Judges Chapters 03 & 04. ESV Version.

Welcome back to Reading with Ben! Let's continue the lecture on the book of Judges.

    This is episode #02 chapters 03 & 04.

Judges chapter 3, summary began with the additional reasons God left the Canaanites in the land to dwell with Israel. The children of Israel needed to be proven in fighting battles. This generation wasn’t proven.

The writer identified the nations of Canaan that God would leave in the land because of Israel’s folly. The folly was the league or covenant they made with the Gibeonites. These nations were namely the five lords of the Philistines.

In addition to the Philistines, the Canaanites, Sidonians, and the Hivites were also there. They were left there to prove Israel; sort of like how Satan was left in the garden to prove Adam.

Judges chapter 4, It began with the children of Israel once again doing evil in the sight of the LORD. They started again once the current righteous judge died, which was Ehud.

When Israel stopped serving the LORD, the LORD would make them serve their enemies. This time they fell into the hands of a man named Jabin, the king of Canaan, who ruled in Hazor. He had a captain whose name was Sisera and he lived in Harosheth where the Gentiles stayed.

Jabin and Sisera oppressed Israel for twenty years and the oppression was harsh. At this time, Israel’s judge was a woman named Deborah. Oh don’t be surprised, well you could.

    This is episode #01 chapters 01 & 02.

Judges Chapter 1, deals with the battles between the Israelites and the Canaanites.

Judges chapter 2 summary began with bad news for the Israelites. An angel of the LORD came and demanded to know why the children of Israel made leagues or covenants with the inhabitants of the land.

The angel asked why had they not thrown down their altars? Essentially, the angel wanted to know why they hadn’t obeyed the voice of the LORD. Because of this, the angel declared that these same people will become thorns and distractions in their sides.

In addition, their gods will become snares or traps for Israel. Obviously, the chapter was a bit out of order as it recapped Joshua’s death again, which he lived for 110 years.
