  • Episode 712 King Richard
Thank you for joining us on this season of our Reader's Advisory book group podcast! It's always better when you are here with us to talk about books. We have more genres to discuss, new books to recommend, and we're so glad you're here to join us. We always enjoy our book group podcast, and we hope you do, too! Our full show notes, with links to beverages, books, and resources from this episode are available here! This week we are sharing a special pop culture episode with you! We are looking at the movie King Richard. IMDB describes the plot: "A look at how tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams became who they are after the coaching from their father Richard Williams." The star of this movie is Will Smith! He's had such a long and varied career, it will be interesting to see him in this new role. The script for this movie was on the 2018 Black List. This is a list assembled annually by Hollywood movie development people. Franklin Leonard worked for Leonardo DiCaprio's production office, and was frustrated by all the good scripts that never got made. So he asked people to name the best unproduced scripts they saw in the last year. He put together the ten most voted for, and called it the Black List. It became an annual list, and the publicity it gives scripts helps push them into getting made! We have more to discuss, so let's settle in and get to the fun part: the book discussion! This week we are taking a quick look at some books about siblings, to celebrate this new movie. Sit back with a beverage you will enjoy, and let's share some books you might enjoy. We always enjoy hosting these book groups with you, and want you to have everything you need for the best experience! And of course, if you are in a library, you can add these books to your collection, or use our suggestions as a place to start in setting up a display for your community members! Do you want to talk about some materials or programming ideas? Check out our Discord channel, talk to us on Twitter or Facebook, or just send us an email! We are here to share ideas across libraries.

  • Episode 711: Reading Beyond Books
Thank you for joining us on the SEVENTH SEASON of our Reader's Advisory podcast! We are so glad you're here to join us. We always enjoy our book group podcast, and we hope you do, too! It's hard to be an expert on ALL of the great books out there! So we pick a new genre each week to chat about and hopefully provide you with some insight into what may be an unfamiliar genre! You can find our full show notes page here, with links to the beverages we are enjoying and the resources we share today. This week we have an interesting development in the book group discussion: Reading, but not reading books! Of course, we love books. But today we want to talk about some other strategies for reading, and writing, that we can promote in libraries. And we have a good Guest Host to help us do this! Noah Lenstra is an Assistant Professor of Library and Information Science at University of North Carolina Greensboro. He is also the founder of the Let's Move in Libraries organization. Their website gives a lot of good information: "Everyone has a role to play in increasing healthy living, including libraries! Let's Move in Libraries is an international initiative to get people of all ages and abilities on the path to health. With their impressive reach and great potential for impact, public libraries can and do support healthy communities through StoryWalks®, seed collections, Yoga classes, gardens, cooking classes, and much, much more. Through Let's Move in Libraries, public libraries can come together with partners to answer the call to action."
